My child was 'elected' as group leader with great anxiety because studying at a school with a long history of achievements was extremely stressful. There was no phone so it was difficult to connect with friends to complete the task well.

That's why I asked my new homeroom teacher to change the group leader at the beginning of the school year.

After only a few weeks of learning to manage a team of ten, my daughter has increasingly shown humility and… helplessness. She has difficulty assigning each group assignment and has been criticized for not dividing the heavy and light work equally.

I struggled to remind this friend, urge that friend to complete their personal work and many times was the last person waiting by the computer to receive the group assignment. If the group score was not as expected, I, the group leader, would be the first to receive criticism...

The climax of the story was when my group was responsible for cleaning the classroom and hallway for a week. The tasks were clearly assigned to the group members since the end of the previous week, but for the first three days of the week, the students were late, cleaned late, the classroom was not decorated properly, and there was still trash in the basket at the end of the session, causing my class to lose points in the competition. The homeroom teacher punished my group to clean the classroom for another week.

I told my daughter to join the group and frankly criticize the students who did not complete their tasks so that the whole group would be punished. She hesitated and begged: "No, Mom...". She was worried that her friends would hate her. She was afraid that her friends would judge her harshly and like to show off. Because of that worry and fear, the solution she chose was: go early every day to take care of cleaning the classroom.

The nature of fear of confrontation and conflict with friends followed my child to high school. In a highly competitive learning environment and facing peers with good abilities and strong personalities, I realized that my child was getting weaker and weaker when he was only managing a team of about ten members. His easygoing nature in behavior and fear of offending friends made him become shy.

My son has resigned from his position as team leader. I always teach him to face all difficulties in life. But I also realize that knowing when to stop when you feel you are not suitable is also a strength that needs to be supported.
