Anything can be bragged about

According to the Oxford dictionary, “flex” means to bend. However, it is also a slang word often used by rappers to brag, to the point of making others uncomfortable.

With such meaning, but “flex” in the eyes of many young people does not bring the feeling of showing off or winning or losing to others. Many young people use those shows to convey positive, happy messages to everyone. For young people, any topic can be turned into something to “flex”: good study, talent in many fields ( music , sports, etc.), family, career, number of likes on social networks or even… having nothing to show off. “Flex” posts often attract hundreds, thousands of likes and a lot of comments and interactions on social networking platforms.

As a member of the group “Flex to the last breath” which is “hot” on Facebook, Nguyen Hong Phuong Thao (19 years old, Phuoc Vinh ward) said that she regularly follows the posts on the group. “The posts of young people are often to share their memorable memories, experiences or achievements. Even famous people like MC Khanh Vy, MC Duc Bao (VTV) or singers Hoang Dung, Only C… share their stories and milestones. From their sharing, young people like me have more motivation to continue studying, working and pursuing their dreams”, Phuong Thao shared.

Not only boasting about their academic achievements, many young people also boast about their meaningful work such as the number of times they donate blood, volunteer trips to help people in difficulty. In particular, there are also "flex" performances of fire prevention and fighting police officers or people's police officers sharing about the joys and sorrows of working and serving the people. "Such stories are very well received by young people, because we often do not know much about the work of police officers, about how they protect people's lives. I think that sharing like that contributes to raising the good image of the people's police force to the younger generation", Phuong Thao said.

A post that also attracted thousands of likes and comments on Facebook was by Nguyen Van Thien Triet, a student who just graduated as valedictorian of the Chemistry Pedagogy Department of Hue University of Education. Thien Triet shared: "I don't have any outstanding achievements, but fortunately I have fulfilled my dream in this life." Thien Triet's dream is to become a teacher to impart knowledge to students. However, the terrible cancer seemed to have prevented Thien Triet from realizing his ambition as it greatly affected Triet's voice. Not giving up, the male student of Hue University of Education has made constant efforts to achieve many good results.

Thien Triet's post attracted many encouraging and supportive comments on Facebook. Even another student at the University of Economics , Hue University took the opportunity to "show off" that he had the opportunity to meet Thien Triet at the Hue University chess tournament in early 2023.

It can be said that the "flex" trend attracts many young people because of the stories shared, helping them gain more motivation, and at the same time, it is also an opportunity for young people to spread good values to the community.

Be careful when showing off

According to Dr. Le Dang Bao Chau, Head of the Department of Social Management, Faculty of Sociology and Social Work, University of Sciences, Hue University, young people showing off their achievements on social networks helps spread positive things to everyone. However, the downside of this can make them become complacent in the face of compliments from the online community. “In addition to compliments, young people can also be affected by attacks. If they do not know how to select and absorb good comments, young people can easily fall into feelings of inferiority and disorientation,” Dr. Le Dang Bao Chau analyzed.

In addition to the risk of personal attacks, young people also face the risk of having their information stolen, especially important information about bank accounts, phone numbers, and citizen identification numbers. Bad guys can take advantage of young people's photos showing off their account balances, houses, driver's licenses, etc. to steal information, and then use it for illegal purposes.

“Flex” is a trend that is spreading strongly among young people because the values and stories shared have been gaining sympathy from the online community. However, young people should also be careful and know how to protect themselves from the dangers on social networks.
