From the legend of the "hundred eggs," the Vietnamese people recognize each other as brothers and sisters, sharing a common origin, a common bloodline of Lac Hong, and a common national ancestor: the Hung Kings. The Vietnamese nation originated in the Hung Dynasty, when the Hung Kings founded the country of Van Lang. The Vietnamese people honor the Hung Kings as their ancestors, and the tradition of worship has been maintained through many generations, becoming a sacred ancestral belief. This belief unites the community and provides motivation to protect the country from natural disasters and foreign invaders.
For generations, in the hearts of every Vietnamese person, the Hung Kings are the founding fathers of the first state in history, the common ancestors of the entire nation. The worship of the Hung Kings is not merely a spiritual activity like other worship practices aimed at bringing peace to the human soul, but also a cultural activity with a communal nature, demonstrating the spirit of unity of the Vietnamese people.
Cultural researcher DUONG HUY THIEN: The origin of the Hung King worship paper is ancestor worship. The Vietnamese people have a tradition of remembering their roots, and while other countries also worship their ancestors, no country has yet worshipped a common ancestor, the Hung Kings.
Since 2001, the Hung Kings Commemoration Day has become a national holiday in Vietnam. On December 6, 2012, UNESCO recognized the "Hung Kings Worship Belief" as a representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity. These assessments and recognitions affirm the stature, role, and significance of the Hung Kings Commemoration Day festival in the cultural and spiritual life of our nation.
Associate Professor, Dr. BUI HOAI SON - Standing Member of the National Assembly's Committee on Culture and Education : UNESCO highly appreciates the Hung Kings worship tradition that has persisted throughout the past and continues to exist today, still practiced by Vietnamese ethnic communities in many rich and diverse ways to honor that tradition.
Throughout thousands of years of history, the Hung Kings Commemoration Day and the Hung Kings worship tradition have become a spiritual anchor, a traditional cultural value, and a strong connecting thread, enabling "the whole country to look towards Hung Temple and from Hung Temple to look out over the whole country." The descendants of Lac and Hong join hands to preserve and develop this tradition in the nation's era of progress, building a more prosperous and beautiful homeland, fulfilling the aspirations of their ancestors.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh – Chieng Coi Ward, Son La City: We often teach our children to remember the Hung Kings, those who contributed to building and defending the nation, our ancestors. I think this traditional custom is very beautiful and we need to preserve and promote it.
Across the five continents, only Vietnam shares a common ancestor, and our people affectionately call each other "compatriots." Each anniversary of the ancestor's death reminds us of our national pride. This spiritual and cultural value will continue to be a source of inspiration and a foundation for every Vietnamese person to strive for progress, contributing to building a prosperous and beautiful homeland, as Uncle Ho advised: "The Hung Kings founded the nation. We, their descendants, must together preserve it."
