Launch of bilateral negotiations between Vietnam and the United States

Minister of Industry and Trade, Head of the Government Negotiation Delegation Nguyen Hong Dien recently had a phone call with US Trade Representative Jamieson L. Greer.

This is an important meeting to discuss the principles, scope and roadmap of negotiations. The phone call was attended by members of the Government Negotiation Delegation and technical representatives from relevant ministries and sectors.

During the phone call, Minister of Industry and Trade, Head of the Government Negotiation Delegation Nguyen Hong Dien affirmed: Vietnam attaches importance to developing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with the United States, wishes to promote economic and trade relations in a balanced, stable, sustainable and effective manner with the United States; Vietnamese ministries and sectors are ready to negotiate and resolve issues of concern to the United States, and together with the United States find reasonable solutions for mutual benefit, in the spirit of harmonious interests and shared risks.

The two Heads of Negotiation Delegation agreed to maintain regular exchanges at the Head of Negotiation Delegation and technical levels to speed up the negotiation process on each specific issue.

The United States believes the two sides will soon reach a suitable agreement.

For his part, US Trade Representative Jamieson L. Greer appreciated the two countries' agreement to negotiate a bilateral trade agreement; expressed his belief that the two sides will soon reach appropriate solutions, promoting stable and mutually beneficial economic and trade relations.

At the end of the phone call, the two Heads of Negotiation Delegation agreed to maintain regular exchanges at the Head of Negotiation Delegation and technical levels to speed up the negotiation process on each specific issue.

Previously, on April 12, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh signed Decision No. 753/QD-TTg on the establishment of the Government Negotiation Delegation on trade issues with the United States.

The head of the delegation is Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien. The deputy head of the delegation is Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan. Members of the negotiating delegation include: Deputy Minister of Finance Cao Anh Tuan; Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Hoang Trung; Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Pham Duc Long; Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Do Hung Viet; Deputy Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam Pham Quang Dung; Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Nguyen Ba Hoan; Vietnamese Ambassador to the United States Nguyen Quoc Dung.

The negotiating delegation has the following tasks: To preside over and coordinate with relevant ministries and branches to develop scenarios and plans for negotiations with the United States on reciprocal trade agreements, in the spirit of ensuring national and ethnic interests and harmonious interests and shared risks. To conduct negotiations with the United States to reach a reciprocal trade agreement that is appropriate, balanced, stable, sustainable, effective, mutually respectful and mutually beneficial. To report to the Prime Minister on the process and results of negotiations; to propose to competent authorities necessary measures and policies to implement the agreement after it is signed.
