Be alert to distorted arguments

The year 2025 marks a particularly important milestone in the 75-year history of the traditional friendship between Vietnam and China - Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership. China is also the first country with which Vietnam has established this highest level of diplomatic relations.

Especially after the historic mutual visits of the top leaders of the two Parties and two countries in recent years, the bilateral relationship has made strong, comprehensive and remarkable developments in many fields.

But there are also reactionary forces that want to distort and divide the traditional friendship between the two countries that has developed strongly. In recent times, whenever the friendship between Vietnam and China has important bilateral events, marking new milestones of development in accordance with the situation, these forces have continuously released distorted and black-and-white arguments on social networking sites and accounts of "characters" who assume the right to represent public opinion to judge, to incite and to create confusion.

The common point that is easily seen in the anti-statements and “judgments” under the guise of representing public opinion is the blatant distortion of the positive developments in the relationship between the two countries, the cooperation agreements between the two sides, especially the bilateral economic cooperation agreements in which each side has strengths and needs. Along with that is the deliberate distortion and interpretation of historical developments in order to create “trust” for the arguments which are nothing more than provocative.

When they feel that the "dose" is not enough, those arguments continue to be radicalized, with the participation of political opportunists in the name of the masses in order to add the so-called "weight" of public opinion, with the sole purpose of inciting public opinion to misunderstand the new developments in the friendly neighborly relationship between the two countries.

What is more serious is that those anti-government arguments used many words and images to insult the high-ranking leaders of the two countries, creating suspicion. They put forward unreasonable arguments such as Vietnam must follow one side or the other, exaggerating unreal dangers.

The vitality of traditional friendship

It can be said that the traditional friendship between Vietnam and China has gone through a period of development, although there have been difficulties, but the main and strategic flow is still good, for the benefit of the people of the two countries.

It is a relationship that has been painstakingly built and oriented by leaders of the two countries throughout history, along with the efforts of the people of the two countries.

The year 2025 is of special significance as both countries celebrate the 75th anniversary of their traditional friendship, which began with mutual diplomatic recognition in 1950. After the founding of the People's Republic of China (October 1, 1949), on December 5, 1949, President Ho Chi Minh sent a congratulatory message to Chairman Mao Zedong. After emphasizing the traditional relationship between the two countries, President Ho Chi Minh expressed that "from now on, this relationship will be even closer to develop the freedom and happiness of our two peoples, to protect world democracy and lasting peace".

On January 15, 1950, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam) was the first country to declare its recognition of the People's Republic of China and on January 18, 1950, the People's Republic of China was also the first country to recognize the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

Entering the 75th year of friendly relations, economic-trade cooperation, investment, and infrastructure connection between the two countries have developed strongly. In 2024, economic-trade cooperation continues to reach a new peak, exceeding 200 billion USD according to Vietnam's statistics and 260 billion USD according to China's data.

Vietnam continues to be the largest trading partner in ASEAN and China's fourth largest trading partner in the world. In the first 3 months of 2025, bilateral trade turnover between Vietnam and China reached 51.25 billion USD, up 17.46%. China has become the largest export market for agricultural, forestry and fishery products, bringing practical benefits to millions of Vietnamese farmers.

There is a Chinese proverb: “The relationship between countries depends on the close contact between people.” This suggests that in addition to increasing high-level exchanges between the leaders of the two countries, it is extremely necessary to spread the positive effects of the visit and the positive momentum in the cooperative relationship to all levels, sectors and people of both sides, and to consolidate a good public opinion foundation for bilateral relations, especially in the current context when both countries are entering a new era and a new period of development.

That is why both countries have identified the 75th year of traditional friendship as the Vietnam-China Humanitarian Exchange Year. That exchange year is implemented by enhancing friendly exchanges between mass organizations, political and social organizations, and expanding cooperation between localities of the two countries. Thereby, enhancing mutual understanding and trust, promoting traditional friendship, and consolidating a good public opinion foundation for bilateral relations.

The Year of Humanitarian Exchange is a driving force and an opportunity for both sides to further promote cultural, educational and tourism cooperation; coordinate and widely implement friendly exchange activities, thereby helping people of the two countries understand more fully each other's culture, country and people.

In particular, to enable the younger generations of the two countries to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors, inherit, preserve and continuously promote the fine values of traditional friendship - a precious common asset of the two Parties, two countries and two peoples. From there, adding strong vitality and a bright future to the bilateral relationship.

Because humanity is nothing other than the most progressive, scientific, excellent and healthy thing in human culture. Diplomatic relations lie mainly in the close communication of people.

At the invitation of General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam To Lam, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Luong Cuong, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping paid a State visit to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam from April 14 to 15, 2025.
