Global coffee prices plunge to record low: Robusta hits 13-month low, Arabica hits 5-month low
Robusta coffee prices are currently trading at a 13-and-a-half month low, while arabica coffee prices have hit a five-and-a-half month low after a decline in the recent trading session.
The market is under pressure this week due to increased supplies from the new harvest in Brazil. Updated weather forecasts show that the risk of frost has eased in coffee growing regions such as São Paulo and Minas Gerais.
Meteorologists predict favorable weather for harvesting across Brazil’s major coffee-growing regions for the rest of the week. However, cold air from a polar air mass is affecting specific areas in Rio Grande do Sul state, which does not grow coffee, and Paraná state, which was once a major coffee producer but now accounts for only a small portion of Brazil’s total output.
Coffee prices also fell as the Brazilian real fell to a 1-1/2 week low against the dollar. The weakness in the real has prompted Brazilian coffee producers to boost exports.
Still, the market found some support as ICE-monitored robusta inventories fell to a five-week low of 5,123 bags on June 25. Similarly, arabica inventories also fell from a four-and-a-half-month high of 892,468 bags on May 27 to 854,206 bags.
In its latest report, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said global coffee production and consumption are expected to hit new records in the 2025-2026 crop year, which begins in October. USDA forecasts global coffee production to increase by 4.3 million 60-kg bags from the previous crop year to a record 178.7 million bags, while consumption is estimated to hit a new peak of 169.4 million bags.
However, the agency also said that the surplus of more than 9 million bags would not be enough to replenish global coffee inventories to a safe level, and forecast that ending inventories would remain low, at around 22.8 million bags.
USDA also forecasts total coffee exports in the new crop year to increase by 700,000 bags to 122.3 million, thanks to growth from Vietnam, Ethiopia and Indonesia, offsetting declines from Brazil and Colombia.
