At a recent press conference held by the National Health Commission of China, experts said that respiratory infections in children are currently mainly caused by viruses and Mycoplasma pneumoniae bacteria - the causative agent of pneumonia. Of these, influenza virus is the main cause.
Dr. Wang Quan, Director of the Department of Pediatrics, Beijing Children's Hospital, said that monitoring results show that influenza virus is the most common pathogen in children aged 0-14.
When children get the flu, symptoms usually include a fever that lasts 2-3 days, accompanied by systemic symptoms such as muscle aches, headache, cough, runny nose, sore throat, and sometimes nausea, diarrhea, or abdominal pain.
For children from 6 months to 5 years old, many parents worry about the risk of seizures due to high fever. Dr. Vuong Thuyen explains that seizures due to fever usually occur within the first 24 hours when the body temperature exceeds 38.5°C.
Children having convulsions often have stiff limbs and clenched teeth. Usually, this condition ends after 3-5 minutes.
Doctor Vuong Thuyen recommends that parents should place their children on a safe flat surface such as a bed or carpet and avoid doing the following three things: do not put anything in the child's mouth, do not give the child food or medicine during a seizure, and do not try to stop the seizure by holding the child's limbs.
After the child stops having a seizure, take the child to the hospital for a check-up. If the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes, take the child to the emergency room immediately.
Since influenza is a viral illness, antibiotics are ineffective. Parents are advised to use appropriate fever-reducing medication to reduce their child's discomfort.
Dr. Gong Yanbing, Director of Dongzhimen Hospital of Beijing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, emphasized the role of traditional Chinese medicine in improving physical condition and boosting immunity to prevent flu. He advised people to keep their neck and head warm, wear hats and scarves when going out to avoid catching a cold.
With the increasing rate of flu, people are advised to strengthen preventive measures, focus on personal hygiene, and monitor their health to protect themselves and their families.
