Specifically, Kia K5 Sedans with a production date between March 27, 2020 and January 23, 2024, the one-way valve of the exhaust emission control system may fail. This part is designed to control the flow of gasoline vapors from the activated carbon tank of the exhaust emission control system back to the intake manifold, thereby improving emissions and fuel efficiency. Due to the described concern, compressed air may flow back into the fuel tank, causing expansion.

Kia America said it is likely due to exhaust components coming into contact with the fuel tank. If the vehicle is driven in this condition for an extended period of time, partial melting may occur, leading to a fuel leak. South Korea-based Inzi Controls is the supplier of the faulty check valve and will replace it free of charge to affected owners and lessees.
The recall documents state that the replacement check valve is a new design. Kia dealers will inspect the fuel tank for damage and, if necessary, replace it. The final piece of the puzzle is a new engine control software package, which should give customers more peace of mind.

Kia U.S. safety experts began looking into the issue on September 3, 2025, after receiving complaints about the check engine light. Customers also reported a strong gasoline odor and a fuel leak. After taking the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, a service technician determined the source of the leak was the area of the fuel tank near the exhaust pipe. As of November 6, 2025, the company had identified 20 vehicles with fuel leaks due to the melted fuel tank.
The K5 has been given a mid-cycle refresh for 2025. As part of the refresh, Kia America has ditched the 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four in favor of a slightly more powerful but less torquey 2.5-liter naturally aspirated engine. The figures are 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet (265 Nm) versus 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet (245 Nm).

A more powerful K5 is available in GT spec, with a turbocharged 2.5-liter I4. In this trim, the mid-engined engine produces 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. Under optimal conditions, the K5 GT needs 5.4 seconds to hit 60 mph.
