On the afternoon of October 30, the “Innovation Leadership 2023” Forum took place at the National Innovation Center (NIC) in Hoa Lac with the participation of more than 200 representatives of Vietnamese and multinational enterprises and corporations. The forum, themed “Corporations and enterprises leading open innovation”, was chaired by the Ministry of Planning and Investment , co-organized by NIC, BambuUP and Global PR Hub.
Speaking at the Forum, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Do Thanh Trung emphasized that, as a general strategic advisory body for the Party and the Government, since 2019, the Ministry of Planning and Investment has proposed to the Prime Minister to establish the National Innovation Center (NIC) to realize Vietnam's aspirations, policies and orientations for innovation in the 4.0 Revolution, through activities to support and develop the innovation and startup ecosystem, contributing to renewing the growth model on the basis of developing science and technology and business models, and innovative management.
According to the Deputy Minister, the wave of innovation is spreading strongly. The ability to innovate is a competitive advantage in today's economy . Large corporations and enterprises are considered particularly important components in the innovation ecosystem, influencing Vietnam's transformation of economic structures.
Deputy Minister Trung said that in order to continuously innovate, we need the joint efforts of all elements in the ecosystem. All entities need to fully promote their roles, enhance cohesion and support each other in the ecosystem.
Within the framework of the event, many business leaders and leading experts provided a panoramic picture and trends in innovation, while also presenting opportunities that need to be promptly seized, providing an opportunity for businesses to discuss and come up with appropriate solutions to create "co-creation" and "open innovation".
Notably, with the presentation "The picture and trends of innovation in enterprises", Ms. Do Ha, Deputy General Director, Head of Infrastructure, Government and Healthcare, ESG solution consulting leader at KPMG Vietnam & Cambodia, said that the current innovation situation of Vietnamese enterprises revolves around the issue of resources and expectations. Only 27% of employees have knowledge about innovation and 38% of enterprises have a defined budget for innovation programs. Meanwhile, up to 45% of company leaders are committed to and accompany innovation and 86% of companies want to have clear changes such as system transformation or creating new products. According to Ms. Ha, to make the innovation process more favorable, Vietnamese enterprises can also refer to current innovation management trends in the world such as focusing more on digital transformation, putting users at the center, decentralized innovation models and open innovation.
Experts from prominent corporations and businesses in Vietnam such as Visa, Vietnam National Petroleum Group, Phuc Sinh Group, etc. shared their success stories, as well as the difficulties and challenges encountered in the innovation process.
The discussion session “Open Innovation - Untold Stories” continued to delve into the process of applying and collaborating on open innovation in corporations and enterprises with typical representatives such as Rang Dong, FPT Smart Cloud, Advantech Vietnam, VinCSS.
At the same time, at the Forum, innovative topics from businesses and corporations were presented: startups need to solve the questions with new and creative approaches such as: Heineken Vietnam, Viettel Group, Qualcomm, Nagakawa Group, Smollan Vietnam, Kowil Vietnam, CMC Corporation... are the pioneers in announcing the topics on this occasion.
In addition, with the goal of realizing breakthrough ideas in innovation, memorandums of understanding have been signed between the following units: NIC and Vietnam National Petroleum Group (Petrolimex); NIC, N&G Group Joint Stock Company and Hanoi Association of Supporting Industry Enterprises (Hanssiba); Palexy Company Limited and Ho Chi Minh City Book Publishing Joint Stock Company (FAHASA), Saigon - Hanoi Commercial Joint Stock Bank (SHB) and Smart Loyalty Technology Investment and Development Joint Stock Company, FPT Telecom Joint Stock Company and Rogo Solutions Joint Stock Company. This is an official "handshake" between state units and enterprises and corporations to create breakthroughs, marking a model of innovation cooperation in Vietnam.
At the same time, the Forum introduced the publication of the Innovation Handbook for Enterprises jointly produced by NIC and BambuUP, providing strategic directions and useful advice for businesses, corporations, and startups to innovate effectively, optimally exploit resources, and actively cooperate.
“The success of the Innovation Leadership Forum is a testament to the power of Open Innovation,” said Ms. Nguyen Huong Quynh, CEO of BambuUP. “By connecting corporations and startups, we can create a launching pad for breakthrough solutions in the future. At the same time, when the subjects in the innovation ecosystem are willing to share resources to move forward together, there will be more spectacular changes in many industries, professions and the socio-economic development of Vietnam.”
On this occasion, Ms. Ann Måwe, Ambassador of Sweden to Vietnam, shared some experiences from innovation in this country. Accordingly, the Ambassador affirmed that innovation comes from trial and error. To innovate, people have to accept risks. Sweden's free education and health care safety net, along with a large number of initiatives and funding programs, encourage Swedes to bring ideas to life without fear of failure. This also explains why Sweden is not only a center of innovation but also a destination for entrepreneurial spirit.
The Ambassador also emphasized that this is the right time for Vietnam and Sweden to continuously improve the effectiveness of cooperation, especially in innovation. “In fact, Vietnam and Sweden have many similarities when it comes to innovation. The establishment of NIC and the launch of the Innovation Leadership Forum today demonstrate Vietnam's commitment to promoting innovation for rapid and sustainable development. In fact, Vietnam has been ranked second in the lower middle-income group, after India. I really hope that this Forum will play a fundamental role in exchanging knowledge and sharing experiences from Sweden in particular and the world in general, contributing to promoting Vietnam's innovation journey,” the Swedish Ambassador to Vietnam expressed.
The “Innovation Leadership” Forum is part of the Vietnam International Innovation Exhibition 2023 (VIIE 2023) taking place at NIC Hoa Lac Campus from October 28 to November 1, hosted by the Ministry of Planning and Investment, NIC in coordination with prestigious partners.
