(BLC) - In this mountainous, border commune of Pa U, a person like Po Lo Hu is not only famous but also a symbol. People look at him with admiration, respect and absolute trust. His words and actions are like a pioneering flag, a bright star on the mountain top, diligently, hour by hour showing the way for people here to escape from a life of wandering, poverty and backwardness.
The day we arrived at Lo Hu's house, we unexpectedly met Ly Ly Khu (born in 1998) and a few other brothers sitting there discussing business. Through their conversation, I learned that Ly Khu was being lent money by Lo Hu to build a house, and Lo Hu also showed him how to grow cardamom, red fruit trees, and raise cows. During their conversation, I found that the way Lo Hu spoke was not at all profound, but the listeners were very satisfied. They were satisfied, because in this land, is there anyone better at work and calculation than Lo Hu? Even if he was not good, in the 2023 rice crop, his family harvested more than 1,000 bags of rice, and after a quick weighing, he got more than 60 tons of rice from upland rice. Meanwhile, the rice output of the whole commune in 2023 (that is, more than 2,000 people in the commune worked in a year) only reached more than 500 tons. Not only that, his herd of cows at that time also reached over 200, in addition, the number of pigs, goats, horses also reached hundreds, and he did not count poultry (he had to arrange a whole family of adopted children to live in the hut to raise them). Regarding cardamom, from the first 80 trees, he now has 15 hectares. In addition, he also has 20 hectares of cinnamon trees, 30 hectares of purple cardamom trees, 20 hectares of red fruit trees. Recently, he also researched and successfully planted Lai Chau ginseng, this will be an extremely promising future for him as well as the people of this land.
Another figure to prove his success in the economic development process is the area of upland and forest land. Talking about this aspect, Lo Hu scratched his head and ears forever but did not know how much land he had. Standing on a mountain, he waved his hand around and said: our land is there. He only said that briefly, but after investigating, we found out that his land was not a forest or a hill but several mountain ranges. Specifically, his whole family could not measure it all, only knowing that, if we went north, his land would reach the Vietnam - China border, if we went west, his land would stretch all the way to Ka Lang and Ta Ba communes... as for exactly how much it was, we would probably have to get the district's cadastral map and draw it, then measure it to be complete. His daughter, Po Le Na, honestly said: our upland land could not be covered in a month! The honest words of the female student made us both surprised and full of admiration for the talent and will of this ethnic minority party member.
Speaking of wealth, we have to compare Lo Hu's income with the commune's. In this poor commune, the budget revenue assigned to him in a year is only a few tens of millions of dong, which is difficult to implement, but for his family, spending hundreds of millions is like a joke. In 2023, he reported that his family's income was about 800 million dong, but if we calculate the value of assets from several houses, cars, rice production, upland rice, livestock, and poultry, the actual number is probably much higher. But what is valuable and admirable about him is not only his determination but also his sharing with the people in the village and commune. When I asked how many people here borrowed money, rice, and chickens from him, he scratched his head and hurriedly went to find the book. Some owe him a few hundred, some owe him a few tens of millions. The number of people he has supported with money and plant and animal breeds (both selling and giving, and also providing technical support until they succeed) is half a thick book. It can be mentioned that the families of Ky Hu Do, Po Ga Du, Po Do Hu, Po Nhu Du all owe him from tens to nearly hundreds of millions of dong, and those who owe him a few hundred or a few million have to wait for him to open the book to remember.
Lending money is valuable, but what is more valuable to him is that he never charges interest to the villagers. He pays back as much as he borrows, and whenever he has money. Talking about this topic, Lo Hu also said: "I only lend to villagers if it is a legitimate need such as buying necessities, paying for children's education or for production. If they burn money for illegal things, I absolutely will not lend it. Doing so is harming my brothers, not showing mercy to them." That is why the villagers love him very much.
But people not only respect him for his achievements in economic development, but also admire his will to master knowledge. When we were at Pa U Border Guard Station and in the center of Pa U commune, we heard a story like a real-life anecdote: Po Lo Hu went to first grade when he was already 19 years old. The story is like this, after a period of monitoring, the former Deputy Political Commissar of Pa U Border Guard Station - Lu Van Theu and the Deputy Secretary of Pa U Commune Party Committee - Ly Xa Phu realized that Lo Hu was a positive factor, an elite mass for the party. Unfortunately, Lo Hu was illiterate. So they encouraged Lo Hu to go to school. “They said that by going to school, you will learn the words of Uncle Ho, and only by studying can you join the Party. When I heard about joining the Party, I was very excited. Because I had never known what the Party was, I only understood that it was “good people”, “people who help people escape hunger and poverty” and “Party members are good at everything”. But at that time, I was 19 years old, and I said that I was shy about going to school. So I refused” – Lo Hu recounted.
Determined not to miss out on talented people for the Party, the shining example of the La Hu people, the Party members of the Station and the commune persistently campaigned. They used their knowledge to guide Lo Hu in developing the economy, and used the good, the beautiful, and the noble ideals of the Party to explain to Lo Hu so that he would have more faith, more love, and more determination to go to school. So in the years 2000 and 2001, at Pa U Primary School, there was a special student entering first grade, that was Po Lo Hu. He sat at the back of the class, also practicing reading "i", "t", practicing spelling "o", "a" to the amazement of his tiny "classmates". The teachers were very happy to have a studious student, but many people who saw that kept gossiping and whispering. They said he was “crazy”, some even said he was “trying to imitate”, and some said as if challenging him, “let’s see how long you can keep up”… Many times when the story came to him, he was very annoyed, so he silently went to the Border Guard Station to find comrade Theu to share. That comrade listened and laughed: “Do you know how many party members have fallen to have peace and independence today? The previous generations of party members, through hunger, suffering and even sacrificing their lives, were determined to follow their ideals, so the gossip of ignorant people is nothing. You just keep studying, and one day you will see the beauty and meaning of studying”.
Actually, at that time, Lo Hu did not fully understand, but when he believed, he believed very much. So every week, he went home to get rice and vegetables to bring to school to be determined to follow the path that the Party had shown him. The more he studied, the more he found the books fascinating, the more he studied, the more he felt small, so he was more determined. And he got his Primary School diploma in such special circumstances. Thinking back now, Lo Hu must thank Uncle Theu, Uncle Xa Phu and the Party very much. Because if they were not enthusiastic, the Party was not determined, perhaps the life of Lo Hu and the people here would be different. Now that he is a Party member, Lo Hu understands more and more the heart and affection of the Party, which is never abandoning the people but always wanting to bring the people a prosperous life.
