Disciplinary warning for teacher locked up by students

A teacher in Tuyen Quang was locked up and had things thrown at her by students. She received a warning for "behavior that did not meet pedagogical standards", and the student was suspended from school for a week.

On January 3, Tuyen Quang province announced the results of the investigation into the case of students locking up and throwing objects at a teacher at Van Phu Secondary School, Son Duong district, which occurred a month ago.

According to the conclusion, the teacher in the incident used offensive words and actions, chasing after the student with her shoes and waving her arms at the student. In addition, during her work, she made inappropriate statements to colleagues and students, and her behavior did not ensure pedagogical standards.

"The above acts violate regulations on teachers' ethics, things that civil servants are not allowed to do, and have a negative and serious impact on the image of teachers, theeducational environment, and local security and order," according to the conclusion of the Provincial People's Committee.

Therefore, Ms. Hang was disciplined with a warning. This is the second level of four forms of civil servant discipline according to government regulations, including: reprimand, warning, dismissal and forced resignation.

The principal of Van Phu Secondary School - Nguyen Duy Sang has not directed and performed his duties in accordance with his assigned responsibilities and authority, causing disunity within the agency and between teachers and students. When the incident occurred, Mr. Sang did not resolve it promptly, did not resolve it thoroughly, and delayed reporting, causing serious consequences, causing public outrage, greatly affecting the reputation and honor of the agency and the education sector.

Mr. Sang was also disciplined with a warning and transferred to another job. The People's Committee of Tuyen Quang province did not provide specific information, only stating that Mr. Sang "received a new, suitable assignment."

The students involved were suspended from school for a week. The school and local authorities are responsible for reminding and supporting them to overcome their shortcomings.

The People's Committee of Tuyen Quang province said that teaching and learning at Van Phu Secondary School has been going on normally and stably. The Son Duong district government will continue to monitor and direct to improve the quality of teaching and learning.

In early December 2023, a nearly two-minute video went viral on social media, recording images of some 7C class students at Van Phu Secondary School, Son Duong District, locking their music teacher in the classroom, cursing and throwing things at her.

Another video shows the teacher waving her shoes around, chasing students around the classroom, climbing on desks and throwing slippers at students.

Son Duong District said the incident happened at 10:30 a.m. on November 29. When the music class in class 7C started, some students asked to leave but the teacher did not agree. After the class, the teacher switched to class 6A, the students came over, insulted her, and recorded a video and posted it on Facebook.

Information from Tuyen Quang province so far has not given details on the cause of the incident. Responding to VnExpress on December 7, the teacher said that at that time, the students "didn't study, rebelled", walked around freely, turned on music and danced on the podium. She failed to warn them, and was even "teased and provoked" by the students. A parent whose child was involved accused the teacher of previously hitting her child twice on the back and once on the hand.

The Ministry of Education and Training assessed that the students locking the teacher in the classroom, cursing and throwing things at her as a serious violation of ethics. Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son said the incident was "unacceptable", but emphasized the need for an objective and thorough assessment to find a suitable solution.

After the incident, Tuyen Quang province requested the Department to strengthen management and evaluation of teachers, implement regulations on teachers' ethics, build school culture, and educate students on ideology and ethics.
