According to the Director of the Department of Education and Training of Thai Nguyen, Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, storm No. 11 and the floods after the storm have caused serious damage to the education sector. The whole province has 180 educational establishments affected; 2 officials and teachers unfortunately died while on duty; more than 11,600 sets of textbooks, more than 55,000 notebooks and more than 5,000 sets of school supplies were damaged. Many families of officials, teachers, employees and students were flooded, causing heavy property damage. The total value of the converted damage is estimated at nearly 182 billion VND.
Immediately after the flood receded, the Department of Education and Training mobilized the entire sector to organize cleaning, disinfection, repair facilities, and mobilize parents and support forces. Up to now, 100% of students in the area have returned to school as usual. Up to now, about 250 groups have come to support the education sector with 400 tons of relief goods, the total value in cash and in kind is estimated at about 40 billion VND. Books and teaching equipment alone have received over 8,000 sets of textbooks, more than 20,000 notebooks (worth about 3 billion VND) and teaching equipment worth more than 3.5 billion VND.
Minister Nguyen Kim Son directed the Ministry's functional units to coordinate with publishers to provide the 3,600 two sets of missing textbooks early next week.
The Minister noted that in the coming time, Thai Nguyen province and the education sector need to prepare documents and investment portfolios to take advantage of capital from the National Target Program on modernization and improvement of education and training quality in the period 2026 - 2035, in which priority is given to investment in educational facilities in riverside, stream and low-lying areas. Along with that is the need to strengthen digital management, learning materials, and periodic data backup to minimize risks in increasingly extreme natural disaster conditions.
Minister Nguyen Kim Son visited and presented gifts at Huong Thuong Kindergarten and Thai Nguyen High School for the Gifted. The Minister requested local authorities to continue to pay attention and support essential equipment, and at the same time direct the review and development of plans to prevent and combat natural disasters and ensure school safety during the rainy and stormy season.
During the working trip, Minister Nguyen Kim Son visited and presented gifts to Thai Nguyen University of Education. This is the most severely damaged unit in Thai Nguyen University, with total estimated damage of about 82 billion VND, caused by storm No. 11. At the same time, he emphasized the requirement to ensure absolute safety of electricity, water, and infrastructure in areas that were deeply flooded; mobilized students to participate in cleaning the environment with safety instructions, considering it a civic education activity, contributing to raising community awareness.
The Minister noted that Thai Nguyen University needs to promote the digitization of records, management, research and training documents; not to leave important documents on low levels, and to proactively back up data periodically. In addition, it is necessary to review and rearrange the laboratory system, prioritizing key, shared, and highly efficient laboratories, avoiding dispersion. The school needs to prepare an investment portfolio to take advantage of target programs, cooperation projects and socialized resources to improve the quality of facilities, associated with innovation in teacher training and development of STEM and STEAM applied fields of study.
The Ministry of Education and Training will continue to accompany localities in overcoming the consequences of natural disasters, modernizing facilities, ensuring safe teaching and learning conditions, and at the same time fully preparing conditions to improve the quality of education and training in the coming period.
