On the evening of September 26, in Dong Ha City, the People's Committee of Quang Tri province coordinated with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Cuban Embassy in Vietnam to organize a rally to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cuban President Fidel Castro's visit to the liberated zone of South Vietnam in Quang Tri (September 1973 - September 2023).

Attending the ceremony were high-ranking delegations of the Party and State of the Republic of Cuba led by Comrade Esteban Lazo Hernandez - Politburo member, President of the National Assembly of People's Power and the Council of State of Cuba.
Also attending were Politburo members: Truong Thi Mai - Standing member of the Secretariat, Head of the Central Organization Committee; Tran Thanh Man - Standing Vice Chairman of the National Assembly; Party Central Committee members: Nguyen Thanh Nghi, Minister of Construction, Co-Chairman of the Vietnam-Cuba Intergovernmental Committee; Nguyen Dac Vinh - Chairman of the National Assembly's Committee for Culture andEducation and representatives of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, central ministries, departments and branches; Vietnam - Cuba Friendship Association, leaders of Quang Tri and Quang Binh provinces and many other delegates.
Comrade Le Quang Tung - Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of the Quang Tri Provincial Party Committee, read a speech at the ceremony emphasizing that in 1973, when the war was at its fiercest, Cuban President Fidel Castro - was the first foreign head of state to visit the liberated area of southern Quang Tri province.
This is an event of profound political significance, encouraging the spirit of the Vietnamese people's resistance.
The image of President Fidel Castro waving the flag of the National Liberation Front of South Vietnam high with both hands on the top of Hill 241, where the smell of gunpowder still lingered and the remains of enemy tanks and cannons were scattered... is forever imprinted in the minds of all Vietnamese people and has become a beautiful symbol of the close brotherly solidarity and loyalty between the two nations and peoples.
President Fidel Castro's visit left many impressions and deep feelings in the hearts of every Vietnamese person in general and the people of Quang Tri in particular.

The 50th anniversary of Cuban President Fidel Castro's visit to the liberated zone of southern Vietnam affirms that Vietnam always remembers and is grateful for the support of Cuba, traditional friends and progressive forces in the world in the struggle for national liberation and reunification; at the same time, it contributes to further strengthening the traditional brotherly solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the Parties, States, Governments and peoples of the two countries.
Speaking at the ceremony on behalf of the leaders of the Party and State of Vietnam, comrade Truong Thi Mai emphasized: Cuban President Fidel Castro was the first and only foreign leader to come to Quang Tri 50 years ago, expressing absolute faith in the victory of the Vietnamese people, a source of strong encouragement for the Vietnamese revolution, and a symbol of the noble international solidarity between Cuba and Vietnam.

Today, let us review this historical event to express our deep gratitude to Cuban President Fidel Castro, a great friend and close comrade who has always given Vietnam great attention and wholehearted support. We express our gratitude to the Cuban people, the progressive forces that love peace, freedom and justice in the world, and all international friends who have always stood shoulder to shoulder, accompanied and enthusiastically supported Vietnam in the past struggle for national liberation and reunification, as well as in the current cause of national construction, development and defense.

Vietnam always attaches importance to relations with traditional friendly countries and progressive forces in the world, consistently implementing a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation and development, diversifying and multilateralizing foreign relations; being a friend, a reliable partner and an active and responsible member of the international community; respecting the right to self-determination of peoples and the principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.
Vietnam and Cuba regularly, sincerely and reliably exchange experiences and lessons learned in the socio-economic development process in each country. The two countries always coordinate closely in international forums.
Vietnam has always expressed a consistent stance in support of Cuba, demanding that the US end its economic and financial embargo against Cuba.
History has witnessed that, despite the complex changes in the world situation, the Vietnam - Cuba relationship has always steadfastly overcome all challenges, constantly developing in both breadth and depth, contributing to the just cause of the two peoples.
We can proudly affirm that the special and exemplary friendship between our two Parties and countries, founded by President Ho Chi Minh and Cuban President Fidel Castro, is an invaluable asset that has been continuously cultivated, nurtured and passed on to future generations by generations of leaders and people of the two countries. We firmly believe that future generations of Vietnam and Cuba will remember and continue this special and invaluable solidarity.
Speaking at the ceremony, Comrade Esteban Lazo Hernandez expressed his deepest gratitude to the Party, Government and People of Vietnam for successfully organizing the ceremony and these memorable days, as well as for always standing in solidarity with Cuba in the most difficult times.
In our bilateral relations, the legacy of Cuban President Fidel Castro and President Ho Chi Minh is very special. Our relationship is exemplary and has become a symbol of the times.
The regular exchanges and traditional cooperation between the two Communist Parties, Governments and Peoples, based on political trust, frankness and at high levels, aim to make better use of each side's experience on the difficult path of building socialism. At the ceremony, delegates witnessed an exchange with historical witnesses who met and served President Fidel Castro during his visit to Vietnam, including Mr. Nguyen Xuan Phong - former Director of the Americas Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In 1973, Mr. Phong was a foreign affairs officer of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam, an interpreter for President Fidel Castro in the liberated zone of the South from Dong Ha town to Hill 241, the headquarters of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam in Cam Lo; Ms. Hoang Thi Cham - a former guerrilla of Trung Hai commune, Gio Linh district, was honored to welcome President Fidel Castro on the southern bank of Ben Hai river and shake hands and talk with him on the afternoon of September 15, 1973.

Previously, the high-ranking delegations of the two countries visited the Hien Luong - Ben Hai Special National Monument; the Provisional Revolutionary Government Headquarters of the Republic of South Vietnam in Cam Lo District; attended the exhibition and award ceremony of the painting contest "Vietnamese - Cuban Children in Solidarity"; offered flowers and planted memorial trees at Fidel Park in Dong Ha City.
