High School Graduation Exam 2025: Closely follow changes to be proactive and adaptive

The 2025 high school graduation exam will be held from June 25 to 28, 2025. This exam will be held for two groups of candidates at the same time: the group following the 2006 General Education Program (for candidates who have not graduated or are taking the exam for university admission) and the group following the 2018 General Education Program. According to initial data from the Department of Education and Training (DET), Ha Nam has 10,480 candidates registered for the exam, of which 10,242 candidates will take the exam according to the 2018 General Education Program and 238 candidates will take the exam according to the 2006 General Education Program. This year's high school graduation exam has important changes, so the Department of Education and Training, high schools, and students have been closely following the changes and requirements of the exam to have thorough preparation.

Important changes

According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Long, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training, the most important change that benefits candidates taking the 2018 General Education Program is that the number of subjects and the number of exam sessions have both been reduced. Compared to previous years, the 2025 High School Graduation Exam will have 1 exam session and 2 exam subjects reduced, and candidates will be able to choose 2 elective subjects from the remaining 9 subjects of the 12th grade program, including: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, Industrial Technology (abbreviated as Industrial Technology), Agricultural Technology (abbreviated as Agricultural Technology), and Foreign Languages. Candidates taking the 2018 General Education Program will take the exam in 3 exam sessions (1 exam session for Literature, 1 exam session for Math, and 1 exam session for the optional test).

This year's exam, in the third session, candidates will take both elective subjects at different time slots. One exam subject can be at two different time slots, so to ensure security and safety, instead of only 24 exam codes, in this exam, the Ministry of Education and Training increased it to 48 exam codes. The exam code increased from 3 characters to 4 characters. For example, with exam code 1001, it was previously only exam code 101. This change in the multiple-choice answer sheet requires candidates to pay special attention. Along with that, from the 2025 High School Graduation Exam, Foreign Language is no longer a compulsory subject but one of the 2 elective subjects among the remaining 9 scoring subjects of grade 12.

Another important change in the high school graduation exam this year is that the exam score only accounts for 50%, the remaining 50% is taken from the results of 3 years of high school (previous years only took the results of grade 12 and the proportion only accounted for 30% - PV). The increase in the proportion of the report card score is to help students have long-term preparation and avoid the mentality of rote learning and biased learning. This change is considered to be consistent with the 2018 General Education Program, emphasizing the development of students' abilities and qualities throughout the learning process.

By eliminating the addition of points for vocational certificates for all candidates; eliminating the addition of points for IT certificates, foreign languages, and intermediate vocational certificates for GDTX candidates from the 2025 exam; incentive points for high school graduation recognition are only added to students who win individual prizes in the excellent student selection exam or students who win individual and team prizes in practical experiments in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, arts and sports competitions, national defenseeducation sports competitions, science and technology competitions, international letter writing competitions organized by the education sector in coordination with specialized sectors from the provincial level and above... not only is it consistent with the 2018 General Education Program but also aims to create equality because students graduating from high school and GDTX education systems are all awarded the same type of graduation certificate. Along with that, in the 2025 High School Graduation Exam, foreign language certificates will continue to be used for exam exemption in graduation recognition consideration but will not be converted into points (10) in graduation recognition consideration as before; the graduation score calculation formula does not include foreign language points in this case.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Long, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training, emphasized: 2025 is the first year that the high school graduation exam is organized according to the 2018 General Education Program. The exam not only tests knowledge but also assesses students' ability to apply knowledge, skills and practical connections - especially with differentiated content. Changes in the high school graduation exam require the education sector, schools and students to closely follow in order to be proactive and adaptive.

Guide students to enhance self-study, organize free review sessions

In the past time, the Department of Education and Training and high schools have thoroughly grasped the contents related to the exam so that officials, teachers, students, and parents can grasp and be proactive in organizing, implementing review, and preparing well for the exam. At the end of February 2025, the Department of Education and Training organized a workshop and training session on reviewing for the high school graduation exam with the following subjects: Literature, Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Information Technology, and Technology. The workshop discussed the development of a review plan, the development of review topics to ensure knowledge and skills according to the required levels of the exam; analyzed the format of the exam structure, types of questions and how to solve the questions, types of questions according to the exam format structure; built a reference test bank according to the high school graduation exam format structure from 2025 of the Ministry of Education and Training. At the same time, focus on discussing to propose effective review methods and forms suitable for current practical conditions; draw experience from review work and some other issues arising during the review process. After Circular 29/2024/TT-BGDDT of the Ministry of Education and Training on additional teaching and learning took effect, high schools have strictly implemented the regulations for staff, teachers and students; guided students to enhance self-study according to the requirements of the exam program and implemented free additional teaching for grade 12 students in accordance with regulations.

In the 2024-2025 school year, A Phu Ly High School has 442 12th grade students. Teacher Luong Van Duong, Principal of the school, said: To prepare for the 2025 high school graduation exam, the school's leaders have focused on disseminating new points and changes in the exam to staff, teachers, students and parents. Among those changes, there are many advantages for students, such as fewer exam subjects, reducing the workload for learners. Almost all subjects that students register for the graduation exam overlap with the subjects for university admission scores, so students are more motivated to study and review. This year, the Ministry of Education and Training also stipulates that universities and colleges do not announce the admission results early as every year, but announce them together with the graduation exam scores, helping students focus more on studying. During this time, the school focuses on guiding students to self-study, requiring teachers to increase the amount of homework assigned to students. At the same time, the school proactively organizes free review sessions for students according to regulations. Currently, 12th grade students of the school are allowed to review 2 afternoons/week. After the end of the school year, from the beginning of June until before the graduation exam, based on the registration of the students, the school will organize free review sessions for students with increased duration. Through the survey, 100% of the school's 12th grade students have the need to review at school after the end of the school year.

The 2025 high school graduation exam has many important changes, requiring students to increase their initiative in studying and master knowledge to adapt to the new exam format. According to experienced teachers, in addition to learning knowledge, 12th grade students also need to practice with exercises that have practical connections, practice critical thinking and reasoning skills to achieve the highest score.
