Get rich from beekeeping

Mr. Le Xuan Cau checks the health of bees.

Through the story, Mr. Cau shared: This is the family's traditional profession and he is the 4th generation to be involved in this profession. With the advantage of the commune's forest land accounting for 2/3 of the area, not to mention the buffer zone of Cuc Phuong National Park (Ninh Binh), it is very suitable for developing the beekeeping profession for honey. Previously, due to the family's difficult economic conditions, he only invested in raising a few dozen hives. In 2010, through the Commune Farmers' Association, the family was granted a loan from the District Social Policy Bank for 50 million VND. Along with the accumulated resources, his family invested in building boxes and buying more bee breeds to raise. He also registered to attend training courses, thereby applying the learned techniques well to help his family's beekeeping model gradually develop. At one point, he raised 500 - 600 honey bee hives and bee breeds.

To have a healthy bee colony with high productivity and quality honey requires the skill and carefulness of the beekeeper. Accordingly, he regularly checks and cleans the beehive to keep it dry; proactively prevents diseases and insects that are harmful to bees. In particular, he pays attention to the growth process of the bee colony, masters the techniques of separating the colony, creating queen bees, collecting honey and pollen, and promptly handles the phenomenon of bees flying away and larval rot.

Beekeeping for honey only requires investment in buying seeds and making boxes, so the cost is low compared to other types of livestock. In particular, Thanh Yen commune has a large forest area and rich flower sources, so beekeeping for honey here is also convenient, ensuring honey quality.

Currently, his family has nearly 300 beehives, each year harvesting 2 to 3 tons of honey, with a selling price of 150,000 VND/kg, helping him earn 300 million VND/year after expenses, creating regular jobs for 3 regular workers and dozens of seasonal workers.

In addition to focusing on developing the family economy, Mr. Le Xuan Cau also actively participates in movements launched by the locality. In 2023, his family contributed 40 million VND to Thanh Trung village to install lighting lines in the village; at the same time, he supported many local households with beekeeping seeds, techniques, and experience to develop the economy together.
