Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Van Quang, Deputy Head of the Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at Hospital 108, said that the 20-year-old female patient suffered from primary sclerosing cholangitis, a rare disease that causes progressive damage inside and outside the liver. For 17 years, the girl had to live with jaundice, abdominal pain, fatigue, and many infections.
All treatments only help delay the progression of the disease, so liver transplantation is the only chance. However, because the father and son have different blood types, the liver transplant becomes more complicated because in adults, the concentration of anti-A/B antibodies is high, the risk of transplant rejection is high, and biliary and vascular complications are more severe than in children.
To perform this liver transplant, before surgery, the patient was treated with Rituximab and plasma exchange to lower antibodies. The team also prepared measures to protect the endothelium, ensure blood perfusion and correct bile duct connection. After surgery, both father and son are currently recovering well, with stable liver function.
