Living liver transplant with rare anatomical donor

The liver transplant was directly demonstrated by Associate Professor, Dr. Le Van Thanh - Deputy General Director of Surgery, Vinmec Healthcare System. This is a highly complex liver transplant from a living donor, requiring deep expertise and sophisticated techniques to ensure maximum safety for the donor.

According to Associate Professor Thanh, normally with a liver donor, the surgeon only needs to cut one bile duct as in liver resections. However, in this demonstration surgery, the donor had a rare anatomical variation with two bile ducts, forcing the team to calculate with absolute precision to have a plan that both preserves the donor's safety and ensures that the bile duct of the graft after connecting to the recipient does not have stenosis or bile leakage. This is one of the great challenges in living liver transplantation.

The surgery was broadcast live to the conference hall, attracting the special attention of hundreds of experts and doctors at home and abroad. The entire process from taking the right liver graft, washing the liver, regenerating to liver transplantation was performed meticulously, accurately down to every detail. Each operation, each incision was monitored, analyzed and discussed directly by experts at the conference, creating an extremely exciting academic atmosphere.

In addition to the demonstration surgery, the Vinmec team of experts also brought to the Conference a series of in-depth reports, sharing practical experiences in the entire liver transplant process - from surgical methods, professional techniques to care, treatment and rehabilitation for patients throughout the entire process before and after the transplant.

The highlights focus on: endoscopic cholangiectomy using ICG fluorescence technology to reduce bile leakage complications; comprehensive rehabilitation strategies to help patients return to normal life soon; and solutions to manage drug complications, control blood coagulation disorders using ROTEM and multimodal anesthesia and resuscitation, to optimize safety for both donors and recipients. These contents are the quintessence that Vinmec's team of experts has accumulated over nearly a decade, and at the same time, make Vinmec one of the pioneers in bringing complex liver transplant techniques from the world to Vietnam.

More hospitals master technology – more chances of survival for patients

Associate Professor, Dr. Le Van Thanh shared: "As a pioneer in the field of liver transplantation in Vietnam, Vinmec not only considers demonstration, training or technology transfer as professional activities, but also as a mission for the community. Each hospital that can master the technique means more patients are saved; each team that has access to international knowledge means spreading standards and hope. This conference is an opportunity for Vinmec to share all the best things we have accumulated, together building a Vietnamese organ transplant medicine that is not only strong in technology, but also warm and humane."
