Doctors performed a liver transplant on 2-year-old patient NTV.
Patient NTV, 2 years old, was diagnosed with congenital biliary atresia - a rare and dangerous disease that affects liver function and threatens life if not treated promptly. Despite having Kasai surgery when he was only 2 months old, the disease still progressed rapidly, causing severe fibrosis of the bile ducts in the liver, leading to biliary cirrhosis and liver failure, requiring a liver transplant to sustain life.
On October 7, 2025, as soon as information about an organ donor at Cho Ray Hospital (HCMC) was received, Hue Central Hospital immediately activated the consultation process and prepared human resources and equipment that night. The organ retrieval team set off on the morning of October 8, divided the liver from the donor's body and transported it to Hue for transplantation to the child patient. The surgery was completed at 3:00 a.m. on October 9, with the liver being reperfused and producing good bile. The post-operative process progressed smoothly, liver function recovered quickly and no complications were recorded.
Previously, the first liver transplants at the Hospital were performed with the support of Associate Professor, Dr. Le Van Thanh, 108 Military Central Hospital. In this transplant, the entire procedure was performed entirely by the medical team of Hue Central Hospital, demonstrating careful preparation, optimal surgical strategy and smooth coordination of the entire hospital, under the close direction of the Hospital Board of Directors and the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center.

Through the success of the 5th liver transplant, the Hue Central Hospital team has completely controlled the process from organ collection to transplantation to patients.
Congenital biliary atresia is a rare disease, with a rate of 1/5,000 - 1/20,000 newborns and is more recorded in Asian countries. Kasai surgery is only temporary, helping to delay the process of biliary cirrhosis. Liver transplantation in children is one of the complex techniques in the field of organ transplantation, and is also the only radical treatment method today.
Hue Central Hospital has been a pioneer in advanced medical techniques for many years, especially organ and stem cell transplantation. With more than 2,400 successful organ and tissue transplants, the Hospital is currently one of the leading centers in the country and the only unit in the Central region to successfully perform the "heart, liver, kidney" triple transplant, contributing to making Vietnam's organ transplant technique famous on the world medical map.
