In a statement on social network X, the Haitian Prime Minister's Office said that the interim electoral council has seven seats with representatives from religious groups, journalists, farmers and unions; the other two seats reserved for human rights organizations and women's rights organizations are still unrepresented.
The Caribbean nation last held a general election in 2016.
Under normal circumstances, elections in the country are held every five years. However, after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in 2021, Haiti has fallen into a state of serious instability, preventing timely elections from being held as armed gangs have expanded their control over about 80% of the capital Port-au-Prince and most other areas.
In April, Haiti's Transitional Presidential Council, a separate body that acts as a government, was formed. It is this body that established the Electoral Council to prepare for the upcoming general elections.
