Almost every month, the Can Tho City Voluntary Blood Donation Club organizes 1-2 blood donation programs in the community.

Youthful enthusiasm

Nguyen Chi Binh, a first-year student majoring in Biomedical Engineering at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy, joined the Voluntary Blood Donation Club when he first entered university, and it has been a year now. Binh moved from Ca Mau to Can Tho to study, wanting to integrate into the living and studying environment in the new city, with the goal of studying well in both professional knowledge and life skills, so that later on he can look back and feel proud of his "brilliant youth". While surfing Facebook, Binh came across some "very attractive" statuses on the page of the Can Tho City Voluntary Blood Donation Club. So Binh registered to be a volunteer and has participated in many blood donation programs organized by the Club. Chi Binh shared that from an introvert, Binh has gradually become more open and sociable, connecting with many friends with the same interests and aspirations for the community. When witnessing blood donors happily giving away 250-350ml bags of fresh blood without caring who the recipient was, Binh was extremely touched by that noble gesture. The volunteer journey further motivated Binh to study hard so that he could do a good job in community health care in the future.

Not only Chi Binh, hundreds of young people from generations of students meet each other at the Club with the same heartbeat towards goodness. Mr. Duong Quoc Bao, Chairman of the Can Tho City Voluntary Blood Donation Club, a former philosophy student of Can Tho University, joined the Club right from its inception in 2016. Initially, as a volunteer, gradually, through time of activities, attachment and maturity, Mr. Bao has been trusted and has taken on the role of Chairman of the Club for many years. Mr. Bao shared that the main goal of the Club is to promote, mobilize to raise awareness and attract the community's response to the voluntary blood donation program. The Club is also a living and training environment, providing a life guide for young people before the future path.

The Club was established by the Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation in Can Tho City, with 50 core members and more than 100 volunteers who are students and young people living in Can Tho. After nearly 10 years of operation, the Club has increased the number of volunteers, at the same time, restructured its personnel and improved its management and operation methods many times. The Club regularly sends core members to attend training courses organized by the Central Red Cross Society and Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital, in order to update the latest information on procedures and safety in blood donation. In addition, the Club also organizes internal training sessions to improve the quality of volunteer activities, ensuring that blood donation activities are carried out professionally and safely.

The Can Tho City Voluntary Blood Donation Club has effectively promoted its outreach to the community, especially the youth, through social networking platforms. Currently, the Club's Facebook page has attracted more than 19,000 followers thanks to its regular posting and updating of interesting content, information, and beautiful images on the topic of voluntary blood donation. The Club also promotes on YouTube, Tiktok, and Instagram to increase awareness of blood donation activities. In addition, the Club continues to promote the role of traditional media such as hanging banners and posters in densely populated areas and organizing direct outreach sessions in the community.

Reward for living a beautiful youth

In the first months of 2025, the Can Tho City Voluntary Blood Donation Club continued to operate enthusiastically. In 4 months, the Club organized 6 blood donation programs, mobilizing nearly 1,000 units of blood. In mid-May, young people continued to carry out the blood donation program; at the end of May, the Club plans to go to Kien Giang province, organizing the program "Red Love" at Vinh Hoa Hung Bac 2 Primary School, in Go Quao district.

In 2024, the Club organized a total of 15 blood donation programs with nearly 3,900 units of blood, reaching nearly 400% of the set target. By organizing at least 1 blood donation program per month, the Club contributes to creating a regular and safe blood supply for the area, while raising public awareness of the meaning of voluntary blood donation. In addition, the Club is also the main force in the programs "Pink Spring Festival", "Pink Summer Blood Drops" and "Red Journey" organized by the City's Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation. In addition to blood donation, the Club also promotes many social work programs such as the "Gifts for Children" program, giving gifts to children with blood diseases being treated at the Can Tho City Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital and the programs Red Love, Pink Moon for Children, Pink Spring Love, etc. In 2024, the Club implemented a series of activities at Vinh Hai 4 Primary School (in Vinh Chau town, Soc Trang province), organizing art performances, exchanges, entertainment, and at the same time awarding many scholarships and gifts to students. The Club also pays special attention to the elderly through the "Pink Spring Love" program at the Center for the Care of the Elderly and Children Without Support in Can Tho City...

Mr. Duong Quoc Bao, Head of the Can Tho City Voluntary Blood Donation Club, trains volunteers.

With positive contributions to the work of mobilizing the community to donate blood voluntarily and social security programs, in 2024, the Can Tho City Voluntary Blood Donation Club was honored to receive many awards at all levels. Including a Certificate of Merit from the Central Red Cross Society of Can Tho City and an award from the Can Tho City Party Committee's Mass Mobilization Committee for its skillful mass mobilization model. In addition, many individuals received awards from the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion and the Can Tho City Red Cross Society. These achievements not only recognize the persistent efforts of the Club but also affirm the pioneering role of the unit in the voluntary blood donation movement, making an important contribution to the rescue and treatment of patients in need of blood transfusion. Mr. Duong Quoc Bao, Chairman of the Club, hopes that in the coming time, it will be possible to gather and connect blood donation clubs and groups in Can Tho to jointly organize large-scale programs and events, promoting the city's voluntary blood donation movement to develop more and more deeply in the community.

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Khoi, Deputy Head of the Department of Humanitarian Blood Donation, Can Tho City Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital, said that the Club has effectively supported the Hospital in organizing regular blood donation programs as well as the hospital's sudden blood needs. Among the provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta, Can Tho provides the largest amount of blood to the blood bank, with great contributions from the Voluntary Blood Donation Mobilization Club. Hopefully, in the coming time, the Club will continue to promote and increase the frequency of blood donation programs so that the blood reserve is abundant and stable, meeting the medical examination and treatment needs of the people.

Ms. Tran Thi Dieu Thu, Vice President of the Can Tho City Red Cross Society, acknowledged the enthusiasm and professionalism of the Can Tho City Voluntary Blood Donation Club, helping the City Red Cross Society successfully complete the targets in the work of mobilizing blood donation in the community. The Club's Executive Board needs to further strengthen propaganda and mobilization work, raising public awareness of the importance of donating blood to save lives. At the same time, promote the role of the Club's Executive Board members as well as the core role of the volunteer force; closely coordinate with the Can Tho Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital to have a plan to organize a regular monthly blood donation program, overcoming the situation of blood surplus and shortage.
