Mr. Loi said that he used to work in the forest exploitation industry. In 2000, when his health did not allow it, he decided to return to his hometown to do gardening. Having a passion for fruit trees, he invested his efforts in renovating and destroying mixed gardens and went to Luc Ngan district, Bac Giang province to buy 3 lychee trees to plant on a trial basis. At that time, he was the first person to bring lychee trees to plant locally, causing many people to doubt the effectiveness of this new crop. Thanks to focused care, after only 3 years, the lychee began to yield a harvest.
Seeing the effectiveness, from 3 lychee trees, he grafted and expanded the area to more than 5 sao with about 120 trees. According to Mr. Loi, depending on the care process, after about 3 - 4 years, the lychee will yield a first harvest and a stable harvest after 5 - 6 years. Currently, on average, each lychee tree in his garden yields about 50 kg of fruit. With the garden price for traders from 25,000 - 30,000 VND/kg, it is estimated that each lychee season he "pockets" from 150 - 180 million VND.
Not stopping there, realizing that citrus fruit trees are suitable for the local climate and soil, he bought orange, grapefruit, and pomelo varieties to test and expand. To gain more knowledge to apply in practice, he proactively registered to attend short-term training courses on how to plant and care for citrus fruit trees, and learned about fruit tree growing knowledge through books, newspapers, and mass media. Currently, in addition to lychee, the entire remaining 1 hectare garden area of his garden is systematically planned and covered with fruit trees, bringing in an income of more than 50 million VND per year.
To proactively source organic fertilizer for plants, he also invested in a goat farm with more than 40 goats, including about 30 female goats. The baby goats born after about 7-8 months of raising can be sold. On average, each year he earns about 40 million VND from selling breeding goats and meat goats. In addition, Mr. Loi also has 10 hectares of hybrid acacia forest, 4 hectares of cassava, deducting expenses each year, his income is over 100 million VND.
Sharing his experience in successfully growing fruit trees, Mr. Loi noted that farmers must invest in care from fertilizing at the right time, with the right dosage, ensuring quality fertilizer, and providing enough water for the trees. To prevent pests, he arranged a stake higher than the top of the fruit trees, with a tray filled with waste oil and a light bulb with a capacity of 50W or more on top.
Every day, you only need to turn on the light at dusk or dawn about 2-3 times, each time for 15-20 minutes. According to Mr. Loi, insects are attracted by the light of the lamp, find the trap and fall into the tray containing waste oil below, preventing insects from laying eggs and sucking and damaging the fruit. Therefore, it has limited the use of pesticides while still protecting the fruit.
Regarding his plans for the near future, Mr. Loi is preparing to plant about 6 sao of MD2 pineapple. This is a pineapple variety that can grow strongly, has high productivity, has thornless leaves, crispy flesh, delicious flavor, little fiber and has been tested by him and found to be suitable for local conditions.
Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Cam Lo District, Nguyen Van Viet, affirmed that Mr. Loi's integrated fruit tree growing model is one of the typical models in economic development of farmer members. Mr. Loi is a typical example of good economic performance in the locality.
Not only enriching his family, he also regularly helps members and people in the commune with seeds and farming techniques to work together to get rich, build a more prosperous and innovative homeland. Recently, Mr. Loi was honored to be one of 40 farmer members in the province to receive a certificate of merit from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee in the movement "Farmers compete in production, good business, unite to help each other get rich and reduce poverty sustainably" in the period of 2021 - 2025.
