Filling the "death hole" on National Highway 3B through Thai Nguyen

After a period of closely monitoring the situation, the construction industry of Thai Nguyen province has taken the lead in filling the "death hole" on National Highway 3B, at Km80+050 in Na Ri commune, to ensure traffic safety and contribute to stabilizing the lives and activities of people in the affected area.

The project "Urgently overcome the consequences of natural disasters, ensure traffic on National Highway 3B at Km80+050" is invested by the Department of Construction, with a total investment of more than 4.3 billion VND from the state budget. The main goal of the project is to handle serious subsidence holes that disrupt traffic and affect people's lives.

The technical solution is to widen the pit to create a construction surface; treat the pit by dropping steel cages filled with rubble, on average 3-4 layers to create a stable connection; fill the rubble to a height about 3m above the old road surface and manually arrange the stone cages to create a solid surface for the pit mouth; restore the road surface structure with standard crushed stone and asphalt layers.

Mr. Nghiem Van Thep, Deputy Director of the Department of Construction of Thai Nguyen province, said that the University of Transport and the University of Mining and Geology will jointly consult on the solution for Thai Nguyen province to develop this project. The project is expected to be completed before August 31, 2025.

Previously, as reported by VNA, on March 29, 2025, in Na Ri commune, a large sinkhole appeared with a length of about 7m, a depth of about 5m, with water at the bottom of the sinkhole; within 1 month after the sinkhole appeared, the sinkhole became more and more serious and many other sinkholes appeared around the original hole with large sizes.

At about 9:34 p.m. on May 26, 2025, an accident occurred in which a motorcyclist was suspected to have crashed into the barrier and fallen into the aforementioned sinkhole.

By June 13, 2025, after more than 16 days of searching using many methods, the rescue team could not find the victim.

The search work encountered many difficulties and dangers, the People's Committee of Bac Kan province (old) agreed with the proposal of the People's Committee of Na Ri district (old Bac Kan province) to stop the search activities for the suspected missing victims in the above-mentioned sinkhole./.
