Landslide in China leaves many dead and missing

At least four people have died and eight remain missing after a landslide hit a village in China's Hebei province.

China Central Television (CCTV) reported on July 28 that prolonged heavy rain caused a serious landslide in Xigou village, Hebei province, China, killing at least 4 people and leaving 8 missing.

Rescue operations are underway to search for missing victims, the report said.

Heavy rain has lashed parts of northern China in recent days, raising the risk of flash floods and landslides in mountainous areas.

According to Xinhua News Agency, in Shanxi Province, China, a car carrying 14 people was swept away by floodwaters near a village in Datong, killing at least one person and leaving 13 others missing.

"A body was found downstream at 1:43 p.m. on July 27 and was later identified as one of the missing people in the vehicle," the rescue center said.

As of 2:00 p.m., authorities at all levels had mobilized more than 700 rescue workers with the support of helicopters, kayaks, etc. to search for missing victims.

"After many days of heavy rain since July 23, local roads have been severely flooded. Water and mud have flooded roads and bridges, making search and rescue work difficult," Xinhua reporter reported.
