According to Reuters news agency (UK), the Armenian Ethnic Armed Forces in the Nagorny-Karabakh region said on September 21 that they had agreed to a ceasefire with Azerbaijan, but important details, including the surrender of weapons, still need to be discussed.
David Babayan, Advisor to the Leader of the Nagorno-Karabakh Region, said that many important issues have not been agreed upon by the two sides. Mr. Babayan affirmed that the two sides have agreed to end military action, but are waiting for a final agreement while negotiations are ongoing.
Asked about the surrender of weapons, Mr. Babayan said that Armenian forces in Nagorny-Karabakh first need to be guaranteed security.
Negotiations between Azerbaijan and the Armenian delegation from Nagorno-Karabakh took place in the Azerbaijani town of Yevlakh. Representatives of the Russian peacekeeping force were also present at the meeting.
A day earlier, with the mediation of the Russian Peacekeeping Force in Nagrony-Karabakh, representatives of Azerbaijan and the armed forces of ethnic Armenians in this territory reached an agreement to cease hostilities, according to which the Armenian forces in this territory agreed to disarm.
On September 19, Azerbaijan launched a military operation in Nagorny-Karabakh after four policemen and two civilians were killed in mine explosions there.
Nagorny-Karabakh is located deep in the southwestern territory of Azerbaijan, but has a majority of people of Armenian origin and wants to join the country. This has caused a persistent sovereignty dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia./ .
