General Khamtay Siphandone, former Chairman of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and formerPresident of Laos, passed away on April 2, 2025, in the capital Vientiane, at the age of 102. To express respect and gratitude for the General's great contributions, Vietnam has decided to hold a two-day state funeral on April 4 and 5, 2025.

The late President Khamtay Siphandone was not only one of the pioneering leaders in the cause of building the revolutionary path of Laos but also a symbol of Vietnam - Laos friendship. Therefore, many Lao students living and studying in Ha Tinh were extremely shocked and emotional when they heard about the passing of the outstanding leader.

Silinya Xayyaphet (class K15 Banking and Finance, Faculty of Economics, Ha Tinh University) shared: “General Khamtay Siphandone was an outstanding leader, a pioneer in building the revolutionary path of Laos. He and other predecessors organized and led the revolutionary movement and achieved consecutive victories, bringing the Lao Revolution to complete victory. I am very sad that a great and outstanding leader of the Party and the nation has passed away forever. He is a shining example for the younger generation to follow.”
Khamphithak Phanom (class K15 Business Administration, Faculty of Economics, Ha Tinh University), after class, gathered with his friends to follow the news about the national funeral to express his respect, deep gratitude and infinite sorrow for General Khamtai Siphandone. In the coming time, nearly 200 Lao students at Ha Tinh University will stop performing arts and sports activities; during the upcoming traditional Bunpimay New Year, activities will also be organized on an appropriate scale.

At Ha Tinh Medical College, Laotian students also took a moment of silence to remember comrade Khamtay Siphandone. The young people shared that although they were studying far from their homeland, in this time of loss, they were even more proud of their nation's traditions and history.
Jindavong Souksavanh (Class 8B Pharmacy College) expressed: “Participating in the memorial service for the late President Khamtay Siphandone in class, I felt very sad and regretful. I am always grateful for what the General did for my country, grateful for the person who made great contributions to building the friendship between Laos and Vietnam. As a student studying in Vietnam, I will try harder in my studies, actively participate in activities to contribute to strengthening the friendship between Laos and Vietnam.”

Seebounheuang Peth - President of the Lao Students Association at Ha Tinh Medical College said: "The Lao Students Association organized a memorial service for General Khamtay Siphandone for nearly 500 students studying at the school to express gratitude for his great contributions. At the same time, we called on Lao students to turn their loss into concrete actions, unite, actively study and work together, contribute to building Laos to become more and more developed and to foster the Laos - Vietnam friendship to become stronger and more sustainable, constantly developing."

Vietnam's holding of a national funeral shows its respect for the valuable contributions of General Khamtay Siphandone as an individual as well as the deep feelings of friendship, solidarity and attachment between the two countries and the two peoples of Vietnam and Laos.
Lao students believe that although General Khamtay Siphandone has passed away, his legacy and thoughts will forever be a guiding light for the younger generation in building and developing a strong relationship between the two nations. The General’s passing is a great loss not only to the Lao people but also to the Vietnamese people - brothers who always cherish the special friendship between the two nations.
