Despite winning the Europa League, Tottenham still sacked Postecoglou. |
Levy told The Times : “You see the explosion of emotion in the parade. It’s fantastic. We’ve finally won a European title. But the Europa League isn’t enough. We need to win the domestic league. We want to win the Premier League. We want to win the Champions League.”
Manager Postecoglou was sacked just 16 days after leading Spurs to their first title in 17 years and their first European trophy in 41 years, securing qualification for the 2025/26 Champions League. However, last season's 17th-place finish in the Premier League – their lowest in history – with 22 defeats in 38 matches, led the board to decide to dismiss Postecoglou.
This decision received unanimous agreement from the entire Tottenham board. The sacking of Postecoglou by the "Spurs" after winning the Europa League also caused considerable controversy. Many Tottenham players even felt dissatisfied with the club's management decision.
However, Levy later explained: “I am grateful to Ange (Postecoglou), and I have no regrets appointing him. In his first season, we finished 5th in the Premier League; winning the Europa League in the second season made us happy. But we needed to compete in every competition and felt the need for a change. I have a good relationship with him and would always welcome him and his family back to the club.”
Thomas Frank, the former Brentford manager, is the replacement for Postecoglou. Tottenham's board wants Thomas Frank to help the team finish in the top four of the Premier League next season and go deep in the Champions League.
