Despite winning the Europa League, Tottenham still fired Postecoglou. |
“You saw the explosion of emotion in the parade,” Levy told The Times . “It was fantastic. We had finally won a European trophy. But winning the Europa League wasn’t enough. We needed to win the league. We wanted to win the Premier League. We wanted to win the Champions League.”
Postecoglou was sacked just 16 days after guiding Spurs to their first title in 17 years and their first European Cup in 41 years, as well as qualifying for the 2025/26 Champions League. However, a 17th-place finish in the Premier League last season – their lowest finish in the club’s history – with 22 defeats in 38 games led to the board deciding to sack Postecoglou.
This decision was unanimously approved by the entire Tottenham board. The "Rooster" sacking Postecoglou after winning the Europa League also caused great controversy. Even many Tottenham players felt dissatisfied with the decision of the team's board.
However, Levy later explained: “I am grateful to Ange (Postecoglou), I do not regret appointing him. In the first season, we finished fifth in the Premier League; winning the Europa League in the second season made us happy. But we needed to compete in all competitions and felt we needed a change. I have a good relationship with him, I would always welcome him and his family back to the club.”
Former Brentford manager Thomas Frank has been named as Postecoglou's replacement. Tottenham's board want Frank to help the team finish in the top four of the Premier League next season and advance in the Champions League.
