Selling drugs "picked up"
Nguyen Thi Thung (born in 1978, residing in Vinh Tay 2 Hamlet, Nui Sam Ward, Chau Doc City, An Giang Province) has a family and sells enough food to cover daily expenses. At around 9:00 a.m. on August 25, 2022, the Drug Crime Investigation Police Team of Chau Doc City Police coordinated with Nui Sam Ward Police to inspect the Thanh Son fish noodle shop where Thung, her husband and children were staying. On the noodle table in front of the house, there was a white stone bowl with 28 transparent plastic straws, sealed, containing white powder and crystals (suspected of drugs).
Continuing to check inside the house, the authorities seized 10 transparent plastic bags (more than 300 plastic straws containing white crystals) and 1 white powder on the shelves and on the washing machine lid. Thung declared that it was drugs, found in front of the house. The examination results also confirmed that it was drugs, Heroine and Methamphetamine. Of which, 21.7 grams of Heroine; nearly 2.9 grams of Methamphetamine. The total amount of drugs discovered and seized by Thung was nearly 24.6 grams.
Defendant Thung
Thung confessed that at around 4:30 a.m. on August 21, 2022, he woke up to clean up his noodle shop and saw a black plastic bag in front of his house. Curious, Thung opened it and saw many transparent plastic bags and many drug packets inside, so he hid them in the house. Due to difficult family circumstances, a few days later, Thung took 28 drug packets and put them in a white stone bowl and sold them to addicts. Thung hid the remaining drugs in the kitchen.
Previously, from August 18 to 25, 2022, the authorities discovered, caught red-handed, and seized many drugs from Nguyen Van Quy (born in 2001, residing in Chau Phu B ward), Nguyen Ngoc Phu (born in 1987, residing in Phu Vinh commune, Tan Chau town), Tran Van Han, Vo Thai Luan, and Hinh Van Sang. All admitted that they bought drugs from Thung to hide and use; but Thung denied it. Based on the statements of the subjects, witnesses, and documents in the case file, on October 14, 2022 and November 14, 2022, Phu and Quy were temporarily detained.
No different from the investigation process, at the mobile court, Quy and Phu confessed their crimes. Thung continued to be evasive, claiming that the nylon bag containing drugs was picked up on the street; he knew it was drugs because he saw the addict using it, but he had never seen drugs before... The defendant also did not admit to selling drugs to Phu and Quy. In the end, Thung bowed his head and asked the law for leniency, saying that due to difficult circumstances, he had taken the risk.
After analyzing the dangerous criminal behavior of the defendants, Chau Doc City People's Court decided to sentence Thung to 10 years in prison for "Illegal drug trafficking"; additional fine of 30 million VND. As for Phu and Quy, each defendant received 1 year and 3 months in prison for "Illegal possession of drugs".
Listening to his sister, transporting drugs to make money
Stemming from greed and forgetting the consequences, Huynh Cong Nhut Hoa (born in 1992, residing in Vinh Nguon ward, Chau Doc city) had to serve several decades in prison. Living in the border area, Hoa is very familiar with the terrain. At about 2:10 p.m. on August 14, 2022, Vinh Nguon Border Guard Station (Provincial Border Guard) discovered Hoa carrying a TV (suspected of being smuggled from Cambodia to Vietnam). Upon inspection, it was discovered that inside the TV were hidden 5 transparent nylon bags covered with tape, containing solid, white crystals (suspected to be drugs). The working group drew up a record of the arrest of the offender in the act, temporarily detained the person and the evidence for verification and clarification.
During the investigation, Hoa confessed: About half a month before his arrest, Hoa's sister (Huynh My Hong, currently living in Cambodia) contacted him via social media, asking about his family's situation and discussing drug transportation. Initially, Hong asked Hoa to transport "water" and "rice" (slang). Hoa did not understand, so when he asked again, Hong explained: "Water" is crystal meth, "rice" is Heroine, each time transporting from 1kg or less. Afraid of being arrested, Hoa did not agree and turned off the phone.
Defendant Hoa listens to the verdict
On August 11, 2022, Hong continued to call, saying that he would send "1 cup of water" (ie 1kg of crystal meth), hidden in an old TV, asking Hoa to receive it, promising to give him 2 - 3 million VND after finishing the job. Hoa still did not agree, and hung up the phone. At noon on August 14, 2022, Hong continued to call, saying that he had sent the "old TV", asking Hoa to come to the "Du Hung" factory area to receive it, someone would deliver it.
Upon arrival, Hoa met a young man about 40 years old (information and residence unknown) waiting on the riverbank. After delivering the drugs, he swam away. Hoa had not received information from the drug recipient, so he drove about 400m, stopped to call Hong and was arrested. Based on the conclusion of the appraisal, the total amount of drugs illegally transported by Hoa was 890 grams, type Methamphetamine. On August 23, 2022, Hoa was prosecuted and detained for investigation.
At the first instance trial, Hoa admitted her wrongdoings, saying that she listened to her sister and went to the location to receive the drugs to deliver them to someone else, without knowing anything. With all the evidence and statements during the investigation and interrogation at the trial, Hoa could not escape the crime and was sentenced to 20 years in prison for "Illegal transportation of drugs". As for Hong (Hoa's sister), she has been absent since 2010 until now, it is unclear where she went or what she did. The Investigation Police Agency of the Provincial Police will continue to verify, investigate and handle the case later.
