Mastantuono was once the new hope at Bernabeu. |
The young Argentine talent only played 6 minutes in the last two matches against Juventus and Barcelona, and is no longer in coach Xabi Alonso's starting plan for big matches.
Real Madrid ended a crucial week with two victories, especially in El Clasico, where Xabi seemed to have the ideal framework: four midfielders and the Mbappe-Vinicius striker pair. In that system, Mastantuono had no place. He had been given plenty of opportunities by coach Xabi Alonso, making eight appearances since the start of the season and receiving countless compliments for his adaptability, character and fighting spirit.
“Franco has special energy and the mentality of a winner,” coach Xabi Alonso once said.
But against Juve, coach Xabi Alonso opted for Brahim Diaz in an attacking role, and against Barca, the four-man midfield system further sidelined Mastantuono. He didn’t even get a minute of football in his first El Clasico. With Carvajal and Alexander-Arnold back, the right-sided attacking role could fall to Valverde, further limiting Mastantuono’s opportunities.
Having joined Real for over €60 million and scored a goal against Levante, Mastantuono was once a new hope at the Bernabeu. Now he must start again with patience and effort if he wants to regain his place in the starting line-up, possibly as early as this weekend's game against Valencia.
