Since the end of the 11th lunar month, the market for renting space to sell flowers and ornamental plants for the 2025 Lunar New Year in Vinh City (Nghe An) has been bustling. The characteristic of this product is that it requires a large area, in a crowded place, easy to attract customers, so many garden owners have had to spend a lot of time and effort to find a suitable space.

This Tet holiday, Ms. Nguyen Hang (residing in Nghi An commune, Vinh city) wants to go to the city center to look for a place to sell flowers and ornamental plants. Although she has contacted many landowners, she has always received the answer that someone has rented it. “Every year, my family sells in our garden and has to wait for customers to come and ask to buy. This year, we want to bring our products to the city center to sell to more customers and also to promote our family flower garden, but all the beautiful locations on the streets have been rented. With so many sellers, finding a place is not easy,” Ms. Hang said.
This year, beautiful premises are scarcer because many vacant land areas in "prime" locations have been built on, and warehouses and yards have been rented permanently all year round. Compared to the market, the rental price of premises for flower and ornamental plant businesses ranges from 200,000 - 500,000 VND/m2, even up to 1 million VND/m2 depending on the location. Therefore, the cost of renting premises is very high, so many people cannot rent a satisfactory location to sell flowers and ornamental plants.

In a newly built shack along Le Nin Street, Mr. Tran The Bao (residing in Hung Dung Ward, Vinh City) is busy installing a light bulb system. For nearly a week, he and two other people have been building the shack, making a roof, enclosing it, and covering it with two layers of canvas. It is estimated that this year, Mr. Bao will import more than 2 billion VND worth of orchids and mai flowers to serve Tet holiday guests.
“The rental price varies depending on the location. The premises here are considered beautiful because the road is wide, there is comfortable parking, and it is crowded, so there are many tenants. I have rented a place to sell Tet flowers here for many years now, but I had to pay a deposit half a year in advance to reserve the place,” Mr. Bao shared.
Many traders have to book months in advance to have a good location to sell Tet flowers. |
With a space of nearly 500 square meters, Mr. Nguyen Viet Hien (residing in Nghi An commune, Vinh city) had to spend 100 million VND to rent a stall to sell orchids during Tet. This year, due to expanding his business, he rented another piece of land, one shack away from this location. Just counting the rent alone, Mr. Hien had to spend nearly 200 million VND for more than 1 month of selling Tet goods. In addition to the rent, Mr. Hien also had to spend more than 10 million VND to build a shack.
“In the past 3 years, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has caused economic difficulties, and the Tet flower market has also been greatly affected. However, in reality, customer demand is always higher year after year. It is difficult to predict the Tet flower season, so we have to prepare carefully for the biggest business of the year,” said Mr. Hien.
Many people are concerned that the decrease in purchasing power will "not be enough to cover expenses". |
While Tet ornamental plant traders have difficulty finding business premises on central city streets, the supply in some suburban districts is quite abundant, with large areas and "softer" rental prices. However, the rental market in these areas is less vibrant because it has not met the top priority of sellers, which is a convenient location and attracting many customers.
