AP reported that the incident occurred on December 12th. At that time, a JetBlue passenger plane, taking off from the small Caribbean island nation of Curaçao and bound for John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City, had to halt its ascent to avoid a collision with a U.S. Air Force aerial refueling aircraft near Venezuela.
“We nearly had a mid-air collision here. They (the US military aircraft) flew directly across our flight path without their transponders on. We were forced to stop our ascent,” the JetBlue pilot said.
According to the pilot, the US Air Force refueling plane then flew into Venezuelan airspace.

Derek Dombrowski, a spokesperson for JetBlue, said on December 14: “We have reported this incident to federal authorities and will participate in any investigation. Our crew members are trained in appropriate procedures for various flight situations, and we appreciate the crew’s prompt reporting of the situation to our management.”
The incident occurred amidst the U.S. military's intensified anti-drug campaign in the Caribbean, and its efforts to increase pressure on the Venezuelan government .
Last month, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a warning to its aircraft, urging them to exercise "caution" when flying in Venezuelan airspace "due to the deteriorating security situation and increased military activity in or around Venezuela."
