On the afternoon of May 5, a strange phenomenon appeared in the sky of Binh Chanh district, Ho Chi Minh City, which was a brilliant five-colored cloud. Viewed from Minh Chau Hall of the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Ho Chi Minh City, the cloud formed an arc embracing the statue of Buddha Shakyamuni.
Coincidentally, this is also the location where the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2025 United Nations Vesak Festival will be held.
This moment attracted the attention of monks, nuns, and Buddhists present at the Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Ho Chi Minh City at that time. Many people used their phones and cameras to capture this moment.
Many monks, Buddhists, and people worshiping Buddha's relics at Thanh Tam Pagoda (Lonely Buddha) also saw colorful clouds appearing behind the pagoda.
At many different locations in Binh Chanh, many people managed to capture the moment colorful clouds appeared in the sky.
According to folklore, wherever five-colored clouds appear, there is good luck, and according to the sutras, wherever there are Buddha relics, there are five-colored clouds.
Responding to Tuoi Tre Online previously, Mr. Le Dinh Quyet - head of the hydrometeorological forecasting department of the Southern region - said that the phenomenon of iridescent clouds in meteorology is classified as an optical phenomenon.
"This is a natural phenomenon that is not too rare. Occasionally, this phenomenon still occurs in the atmosphere when cloud particles or ice crystals with small individual structures scatter light.
The colors in the clouds at this time are not like the rainbow phenomenon (7 colors) according to the solar spectrum. The iridescent clouds are sometimes pale, sometimes very colorful.
With the rainbow phenomenon, we can only observe it when we turn our backs to the Sun. Rainbows usually appear in the morning or evening with an observation angle of 42 degrees, and often when the rain has just stopped. As for the iridescent cloud phenomenon, we can observe it more widely, in any position," Mr. Quyet analyzed.
