Kirsty, 30, lives in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia. After giving birth to her first daughter, Violet, she suffered from uterine hemorrhage, which caused her blood vessels to rupture and bleed profusely. Doctors had to perform a hysterectomy to save her life, according to The Daily Mirror (UK).
Kirsty became pregnant after receiving a uterus transplant from her mother.
Kirsty still wanted to have another child. Because she no longer had a uterus, this was impossible. However, hope was given when she participated in a study at The Royal Hospital for Women in Sydney (Australia).
Experts in the study will transplant a uterus into her. The uterus donor is none other than Michelle Bryant, her biological mother.
The transplant surgery took 16 hours. Just a few weeks after the transplant, doctors implanted an embryo into the uterus. The embryo developed into a healthy fetus.
"I was so excited when I found out I was pregnant. I was so lost in the thought that I would have another baby by the end of the year," Kirsty shared.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Michelle is very happy and eagerly waiting for her grandchild. However, Mrs. Kirsty's pregnancy is assessed by doctors as high-risk. Therefore, her health is closely monitored by doctors.
The baby is due in December this year. Kirsty will give birth by caesarean section.
Doctors also said that because there are no more nerves connected to the uterus, Kirsty will not feel any pain if she goes into labor. From the 18th week of pregnancy onwards, Kirsty has to go to the hospital for monitoring twice a week, according to The Daily Mirror .
