Along with Messi, former world-class football stars such as Andriy Shevchenko, Francesco Totti, Gianluigi Buffon, Ronaldinho... and football federations, especially the Argentine Football Federation, San Lorenzo Club, Pope Francis' favorite team, all posted condolences and tributes to Pope Francis.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino wrote: "I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Pope Francis. I had the honour of spending time with him on several occasions, and he always shared his passion for football and stressed the important role that the sport plays in society, especially ineducating and protecting children around the world."
"Football is the most beautiful sport in the world..." those were his words, FIFA President Gianni Infantino stressed. He also expressed: "Earlier this year at the World Leaders' Summit on Children's Rights in the Vatican, he reiterated his hope for football as a unifying force globally and a positive force for good".
The Argentine Football Federation's account also reposted an emotional image of the legendary Diego Maradona giving Pope Francis the Argentina national team's number 10 shirt with his name: "Francisco". The Italian national team's account recalled Pope Francis' immortal words: "Even with a rag ball, you can still do miracles. Rest in peace, Pope Francis".
Meanwhile, in memory of Pope Francis, the Serie A (Italy) organizers announced that all matches scheduled for April 21 and the Primavera 1 tournament have been postponed. The dates of these matches will be rearranged and announced in the near future.
