The silver carp is a special fish that lives in clear spring water, often appearing in the rivers and streams of the northern mountains. Many people easily confuse the silver carp with the green dam fish, but these two species have different shapes and characteristics. The silver carp has a long, slender body, bright scales, white, fragrant and firm meat, is very popular, and can be processed into many dishes, such as: salad, grilled... Silver carp meat is sweet and fatty, so it is considered a "specialty of the Northwest mountains and forests".

In the past 5 years, some new farming households have successfully bred, opening up a new direction for economic development based on available specialty resources. Mr. Ngan Van Thiet, Chieng Hin village, shared: I started domesticating bream caught from streams to try raising in my family pond. Over time, realizing that this fish species adapts very well to the natural conditions of the locality, I boldly expanded the farming area and experimented with breeding. bream reproduce naturally in the rainy season, to stimulate spawning, it is necessary to treat the water environment clean, ensuring the appropriate temperature. Although it is a rare fish species, it takes 2-3 years for fish farmers to sell it with a weight of 1.5-2.5kg. Therefore, in addition to commodity production, we still focus on preserving the rare genetic resources of this specialty fish species.

Currently, Mr. Thiet has 10 fish ponds with more than 1 ton of fish and over 400,000 fish fry. The average selling price of fish fry is 250,000 VND/kg, fish fry is from 6,000-12,000 VND/fish. Each year, after deducting expenses, the family earns over 350 million VND. To develop the local bream farming industry, he actively shares techniques and provides breeds to many households in the commune, helping people to replicate the model, making bream a direction for economic development.

In 2023, Ms. Ha Thi Hue , Pu Lau village also decided to invest 20 million VND to buy silver carp fry, raising them in a pond of more than 60 square meters. Ms. Hue shared: Up to now, the silver carp have developed very well, eat well, have few diseases, and grow quickly. If all goes well, they can be sold in about 18 months. The most important thing when raising silver carp is to proactively have a clean water source, regularly check the water quality, feed the right amount and monitor the health of the fish. Every day, the fish are fed early in the morning with food mainly grass and fish bran.

Ms. Ha Thi Than, Vice Chairwoman of Xuan Nha Commune People's Committee, said: The whole commune has more than 25 hectares of ponds for raising silver carp; the selling price is much higher than other traditional fish, gradually becoming one of the specialty products with economic value for farmers in Xuan Nha border commune. The locality has stepped up product promotion, created consumption links with businesses and cooperatives inside and outside the province, helping farmers increase income and develop a sustainable economy.
