Immunizations are not just for children, they are an important part of preventive health care at every stage of life. Vaccines can help reduce antibiotic resistance by reducing the incidence of infections that require antibiotic treatment.
However, in reality, only a few countries recommend full vaccination for all ages.
The world is undergoing a significant demographic shift, with population ageing becoming a major trend. According to estimates from the World Health Organization, the global population aged 60 and over is growing rapidly, from 1 billion in 2020 to 1.4 billion in 2030.
Population ageing presents some major public health challenges as older people become more susceptible to chronic and preventable diseases. Notably, protection against 25 infectious diseases is now available, but vaccination rates among adults remain low worldwide .
Addressing this challenge requires raising awareness and trust in the importance of keeping people and communities healthy with protective measures such as adult immunization. This requires a paradigm shift from health care interventions that are primarily treatment-focused to preventive interventions that leverage new technologies and innovations, and include immunization as a powerful tool.
World Immunization Week (April 24-30) highlights lifelong immunization: a vision for a healthy future.
Dr. Pham Thi My Lien, Chairman of GSK Vietnam, said that investing in adult vaccination is very important to help prevent disease and improve outcomes for people, society, health systems and the economy .
“On the occasion of World Immunization Week 2025, we, together with our strategic partners, continue our efforts to transform from “patient care” to “proactive health care” through activities to facilitate access and build trust in the value of adult vaccination, establishing prevention as the standard of care,” said Dr. Pham Thi My Lien.
With advances in science and technology, humans have the ability to prevent and alter the course of disease better and faster; and to address greater challenges such as antibiotic resistance, climate change and population aging.
Vaccination of adults could, on average, yield 19 times the cost of healthcare and wider socioeconomic benefits – allowing older adults to stay more active and healthy.
