Moscow and Pyongyang agree on timing of Putin's visit to North Korea

According to Ivan Zhelokhovtsev, Head of the First Asian Department (Russian Foreign Ministry), Moscow and Pyongyang have agreed on specific items during Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to North Korea through diplomatic channels.

Previously, Dmitry Peskov - Press Secretary of the Russian President announced that Mr. Putin's visit to North Korea will not take place before the end of March.

Mr. Ivan Zhelokhovtsev informed that during the summit at the Vostochny Cosmodrome in September 2023, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un invited the Russian President to visit Pyongyang. This invitation was confirmed during the recent visit to Russia by North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui. The specifics of this visit will be agreed through diplomatic channels.

The meeting between President Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia's Far Eastern Amur region on September 13 underscored North Korea's desire to develop relations with Russia.

Mr. Kim Jong Un expressed support for all decisions of Russia and believed in the close relationship between the two countries.

The North Korean leader noted that the former Soviet Union played an important role in the formation and independence of the DPRK. He also stressed that the friendship between the two countries has "deep roots" and that the top priority of the DPRK is to strengthen ties with Russia. He believed that this summit will elevate bilateral relations to a new level.

Mr. Kim Jong Un thanked President Putin for inviting him to visit Russia and for the opportunity to tour the Vostochny Cosmodrome, which he called "the heart of the space power." President Putin, meanwhile, expressed his joy at meeting the Chairman of the State Council of North Korea and welcoming him at the spacedrome.

President Putin also mentioned that the Soviet Union was the first country to establish diplomatic relations with North Korea on October 12, 1948, and North Korea officially recognized Russia as the legitimate successor of the Soviet Union.
