
According to AFP, on February 16, US President Donald Trump said he could meet with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin "very soon," and also believed that Putin genuinely wanted to end the conflict in Ukraine.
When asked about updates regarding a possible upcoming meeting between the two leaders in Saudi Arabia, Trump said: "No date has been set, but it could be very soon."
Following an initiative by the US, the heads of the US and Russian foreign ministries recently held a telephone conversation.
According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry , Foreign Ministers Sergei Lavrov and Marco Rubio affirmed their readiness to restore mutually respectful dialogue, agreed on regular contacts, including preparations for a meeting between Putin and Trump; agreed to maintain channels of communication to resolve outstanding issues in relations between the two countries; and discussed measures to end the policy of tightening working conditions for Russian diplomatic missions in the US initiated by former President Barack Obama.
The two sides also agreed to hold a meeting of experts to coordinate steps to remove common obstacles in the work of Russian and American foreign missions, reaffirming their commitment to cooperation on current international issues, including Ukraine and the Middle East.
On February 12th, Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a telephone conversation lasting nearly an hour and a half. The leaders discussed a range of issues, including resolving the situation in Ukraine.
