Only the pit of despair remains

On the evening of November 23, after a journey of more than 3 hours crossing mountain passes, Thanh Nien Newspaper reporters were able to reach Son Hoa commune, a mountainous commune of the old Phu Yen (now part of Dak Lak).

This place, located at the headwaters of the Ba Ha River , had to endure the terrible devastation of the historic flood, many houses completely collapsed, pushing people into poverty and despair.

In the middle of the night, all that remained was ruins. Along with that was a memory of a terrible night of rain and flood that perhaps the people of Son Hoa will never forget for the rest of their lives.

Along Tran Phu Street (Trung Hoa village), the scene that appeared was just a long chain of ruins. A series of houses were completely destroyed by the flood. In the pitch-black darkness when night fell, not a single person passed by. A cold feeling enveloped the ruins that had just experienced the disaster.

In the middle of that dark night, Thanh Nien Newspaper reporter met Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Ky (47 years old), the owner of a house that had just completely collapsed. Mr. Ky and his wife were trying to dig and find what was left in the rubble. Mr. Ky's face was blank, still in shock at the great loss.

Mr. Ky trembled as he recounted the terrifying moment: "On the night of November 19 and the early morning of November 20, due to the hydroelectric plant releasing large amounts of floodwater, the water level of the Ba Ha River rose alarmingly, more than 3.5 meters high in the blink of an eye, causing terrible flooding."

"Seeing the water rising so quickly, my family rushed to the house next door to take refuge. The water level was really terrible, not only rising high but also accompanied by strong waves hitting the house directly. When the water receded on November 20, the house had collapsed," Mr. Ky continued.

The house was a lifelong asset that disappeared, leaving a deep hole of despair.

For Mr. Ky, the flood swept away all the assets he had accumulated over his life.

Feeling like being "forgotten"

The material loss was heavy, but what made the people here feel more tormented was the feeling of being "forgotten".

Mr. Ky shared sadly: "In the past few days, because of the distance, very few volunteer groups have come here to provide relief. I myself have not received anything from the groups. Currently, I have to borrow clothes from relatives to wear."

Darkness fell, "swallowing" the devastated houses in the mountainous commune of Son Hoa, upstream of the Ba Ha River.

The people here are urgently waiting for the community's help. They need relief shipments and shared warmth to be directed to these "forgotten depressions".
