"Sweet fruit" for humanitarian efforts
Implementing the direction of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, the Provincial Emulation and Reward Council coordinated with the Provincial Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee to launch the emulation movement "Join hands to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses" in the province. The Fatherland Front Committees at all levels and member organizations actively promoted the movement so that people and businesses could understand the humanistic meaning of the movement. After launching, the movement received positive responses and financial contributions from many organizations and individuals.
The efforts and consensus brought about impressive results. The whole province mobilized nearly 490 billion VND and implemented the construction and repair of 9,082 houses, including 2,024 houses for people with meritorious services to the revolution and relatives of martyrs; 714 houses supported by 2 national target programs; 5,688 temporary and dilapidated houses for poor and near-poor households were eliminated; and 656 houses were supported for other groups. This achievement not only demonstrates financial success, but also demonstrates the spirit of mutual love and sharing of the community.
The story of Thoai Son district (before the administrative reorganization) is a bright spot. With the decisive participation of the Party committees, authorities and the people's cooperation, Thoai Son reached the finish line early, completing the goal of building and repairing 172 houses for people with revolutionary contributions, poor and near-poor households ahead of schedule. The success of Thoai Son shows that with the right and decisive leadership and the consensus of the entire population, all goals can be achieved.
According to the Provincial People's Committee, the emulation movement "Joining hands to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses" has made an important contribution to the completion of the goal of supporting people with revolutionary contributions, poor and near-poor households to have stable housing. To achieve results in a short time is thanks to the synchronous participation of the entire political system and the cooperation and consensus of all levels and sectors, along with the positive response from organizations, businesses, philanthropists, officers and soldiers of the armed forces, union members, association members and people in the whole province. In particular, the police and military forces contributed more than 10,000 working days to build houses for people, contributing to completing the set progress ahead of schedule.
Timely and meaningful action
An Giang 's success contributes to the overall achievements of the whole country in implementing the emulation movement "Joining hands to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses". According to the results compiled from 34 localities across the country, by August 20, 2025, all localities have completed 100% of the houses in need of support for 3 target groups. A total of 334,234 houses have been newly built and repaired. This achievement is especially meaningful when it was completed after only 1 year, 4 months and 13 days, since the Prime Minister launched the emulation movement and after only 10 months and 21 days of implementing the peak emulation period "450 days and nights".
Solid, spacious houses are not only a place to shelter from the sun and rain, but also a solid support for people to work and produce with peace of mind, overcome difficulties, improve their lives, and contribute to building a better society. For many households, receiving a house is a priceless gift, a great happiness after many years of living in poverty and anxiety. Ms. Truong Thi Nhi, residing in Thoai Son commune, shared: "Before, the house was shabby, every time there was a storm, I was very scared. Due to difficult circumstances, I never dared to dream of having a spacious, solid house." Ms. Nhi is poor, making a living by selling lottery tickets, and had taken care of her sick mother-in-law for many years. When she received support to build a new house, she was very happy and moved. The house cost 80 million VND, of which the local government and benefactors supported 60 million VND.
Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Oc Eo commune, Tran Anh Tuan, said: “The emulation movement “Joining hands to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses” has brought practical results and profound meaning to the people. In the three communes of Vong Dong, Vong The and Oc Eo town (before merging into Oc Eo commune), the locality has built and repaired 79 houses, with a total cost of more than 4.1 billion VND”.
The story of removing temporary and dilapidated houses in Vietnam in general and An Giang in particular is not only a story of newly built houses but also a story of compassion, sharing and belief in a brighter future.
