This list was recently announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences after a selection process from 86 eligible countries and territories.

In the Best International Film category at the 2026 Oscars, 15 shortlisted films from diverse film industries were selected, including: Argentina with “Belén”, Brazil with “The Secret Agent”, France with “It Was Just an Accident”, Germany with “Sound of Falling”, India with “Homebound”, Iraq with “The President's Cake”, Japan with “Kokuho”, Jordan with “All That's Left of You”, Norway with “Sentimental Value”, Palestine with “Palestine 36”, South Korea with “No Other Choice”, Spain with “Sirât”, Switzerland with “Late Shift”, Taiwan with “Left-Handed Girl” and Tunisia with “The Voice of Hind Rajab”.

According to international observers, this year's awards season is considered particularly competitive, bringing together many works that have won awards or made a splash at major film festivals. In addition, there are films that have achieved significant commercial success in their domestic markets. This diversity further demonstrates that the International Film category is one of the spaces that most clearly reflects the cultural depth and artistic perspectives of world cinema.

"Red Rain," a screenplay by writer Chu Lai, is set in 1972, a historical period when Quang Tri became a hotbed of conflict. The film recreates the moment when the South Vietnamese Liberation Army gained control of Quang Tri province, against the backdrop of the US increasing its military support for the South Vietnamese army in preparation for a counterattack, particularly in the ancient citadel area, with the goal of gaining an advantage at the negotiating table.

In the domestic market, "Red Rain" has been a huge hit. After more than a month of release, the film has attracted over 8.1 million viewers, becoming the most-watched film in Vietnamese box office history. By September 28th, the film's revenue reached 710 billion VND. In the final days of its screening period, many large cinemas maintained a stable number of screenings with full seats.

In late November, "Red Rain" was selected as Vietnam's representative in the Best International Film category at the 98th Academy Awards. According to the film regulatory body, this is considered a milestone demonstrating Vietnam's efforts to integrate into the world's largest film industry.

However, for over two decades, Vietnamese cinema has never come close to receiving an official nomination in this category. A rare notable case was in 2022, when director Ha Le Diem's ​​"Children in the Mist" made it into the top 15 nominations for Best Documentary.

According to the plan, from a shortlist of 15 films, the Academy will continue to vote to select 5 official nominees, expected to be announced on January 22, 2026. The 98th Academy Awards ceremony will take place on March 15, 2026.
