Summer in the countryside

The countryside is not as bustling and there are not as many entertainment activities as in the city. But the summer experience in the countryside always leaves unforgettable memories in childhood memories.

There are fun activities in the countryside that are difficult to find in the city.

Born and raised in the countryside, when she grew up, had a family and settled down in the city, Ms. Ngo Thi Hong Loan (living in Long Xuyen City) always carried in her memories of memorable summer days. Ms. Loan said: “Summer days in the countryside begin early in the morning, when the sun is still hidden behind the rows of crabs in the fields. My grandfather wakes up to light the fire and make tea, the smoke from the stove spreads in the morning air, creating a familiar scent that, no matter where I live, I cannot forget. At that time, the children in the neighborhood ran everywhere before breakfast, some went fishing, some followed their father to the fields. There were no phones, no tablets, and no cool air conditioning, but every summer day that passed was a day of complete joy.”

For Ms. Loan, her childhood was like that, so her children also need to fully enjoy the summer so as not to "lose" their childhood. Therefore, every summer, she takes her children to her maternal hometown to experience the true summer. Ms. Loan shared: “Summer in the countryside is not as noisy and brilliant as in the city, but always has a simple beauty that makes people remember forever. There, children can experience fun activities to connect with their peers in the neighborhood, learn about the rural lifestyle to gain more knowledge. Like every year, this year I continue to take my two children to spend the summer with their grandparents. Every summer that passes, the children are always full of memories and eagerly look forward to the next summer.”

In the cool afternoon, Mr. Nguyen Van Nam (living in Chau Phu district) went to the garden to harvest mangoes, followed by his 10-year-old grandson who eagerly helped carry the tools. Mr. Nam said: “The boy has been home for 2 weeks of summer vacation, he lives with his parents in Ho Chi Minh City, normally goes to school, on his days off he just stays at home watching his phone, surfing the internet. This summer, he was allowed to come here to play, every day he follows his grandparents to the garden, his uncle lets him go swimming in the river, go flying kites with his cousins, he really likes it. These past few days, his parents have wanted to take him home, but he refused.” For some parents, taking their children back to their hometown for summer vacation not only helps them experience the summer, but also trains them. Ms. Loan said: “When I let my children go back to the countryside to play in the summer, I also worry less, no longer have to be wary of my children glued to the TV, phone, or worry when they leave the crowded garage. In the countryside, the children can freely run and jump, freely play, and enjoy many interesting things that the city does not have. Not only do they have fun, the children also learn about the hard work of farming, know the names of some agricultural tools, and learn about many plants and animals that they have only seen in books. When they participate and help their grandparents with simple tasks, sometimes just picking a handful of vegetables, sweeping the yard, cleaning the dishes for dinner... it is also a way to teach and train. After each summer vacation, I feel changes in my two children, they are bolder in everything, especially proactively helping their mother with housework.”

Not only children, but also young people who leave their hometowns to study at universities in Ho Chi Minh City like Nguyen Tran Thien (living in Chau Phu district) always take advantage of their time to return home for a few days of summer vacation after each school year. Thien said: “Summer in the countryside does not have modern entertainment areas, cinemas or large shopping malls, and some things are not as convenient as in Ho Chi Minh City, but there are things that people born in the city have never experienced. When I returned to my hometown in the summer, I invited a few close friends. When I came back here, I took them to catch frogs and remove fishing nets. On the day of the power outage, everyone in the neighborhood gathered together, spread a tarp out in the yard and sat down to talk. Stories from the neighborhood, the garden, and the fields were shared with each other, and they enjoyed it so much. When we had to return to Ho Chi Minh City, everyone felt sorry.”

The first time I returned to my hometown during the summer vacation, Luong Minh Nhat (living in Ho Chi Minh City) said: “Experiencing the summer days in my hometown gives me special feelings. Coming here, I can immerse myself in nature, wake up in the morning to hear the rooster crowing, go fishing, catch frogs, and help harvest vegetables. At noon, I lie in a hammock under the shady trees behind the house, with snacks available nearby, which feels very comfortable. It is not noisy or crowded here, everyone in the neighborhood is close-knit and supports each other like family. Knowing that we came from Ho Chi Minh City to visit, the uncles and aunts around us are very happy and enthusiastic, if they have delicious food, they will bring it over to share or invite us to their house for dinner. Everyone tells me to remember to come back next summer…”.
