However, just a few days before, the urban renovation project for residential areas on and along canals and ditches in District 8 was still being vigorously implemented and was just approved by Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Nguyen Van Duoc, demonstrating the spirit of always paying attention to improving the quality of people's lives.
In Ho Chi Minh City, currently, in addition to the area on the north bank of the Double Canal and some other places where there have been renovation projects; according to statistics, in District 8, there are nearly 15,000 houses built on and along rivers and canals, such as: Ong Lon, Ong Be, Can Giuoc, Ben Nghe, Double Canal, Xang, Ruot Ngua... More than 1,500 of these houses are located entirely on the water, many areas are degraded and seriously polluted.
The project will relocate all the above-mentioned houses, combined with investment in resettlement areas, social housing, renovation of old apartments... to arrange better places for people to live. Of which, 9 resettlement and social housing projects are expected to be implemented. In addition to serving housing needs, these places will integrate many utilities, such as schools, healthcare , green areas, and solutions to create livelihoods for people to stabilize their lives in the long term. Along with the process of clearing the houses, about 36.5km of canals will be dredged, embankments will be built, combined with the development of green areas and public spaces. At the same time, the city will review planning indicators, exploit and use land effectively after relocation to achieve the highest efficiency in urban beautification.
The total cost of implementing the above project is estimated at over 105,000 billion VND. The city will exploit the clean land fund after relocation, including auctioning and developing commercial housing, with expected revenue equivalent to the total investment cost. In addition to this source of revenue, the urban area will be renovated, helping long-term development and improving the quality of life of the people.
Ho Chi Minh City currently has nearly 40,000 houses on and along canals, with District 8 being the most concentrated. The city strives to basically relocate and resettle all households by 2030, renovate the urban area, and effectively exploit land funds along canals.
Looking back at past experiences, from 1993 to present, Ho Chi Minh City has relocated more than 44,300 houses on and along canals. The clearance of slum houses along canals not only changes the living conditions for tens of thousands of households, but also helps to beautify the city, creating a new look on many canals such as Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe, Tau Hu - Ben Nghe, Tan Hoa - Lo Gom... These experiences will certainly be promoted in the future, not only in the field of urban beautification, but in all aspects of society, when Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau merge into Ho Chi Minh City to form the new Ho Chi Minh City from July 1, 2025, all for one of the highest purposes of serving the people and improving the quality of life of the people.
