The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) has just released the Global Peace Index, considered the world's leading measure of safety in the world. The index is calculated using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators from highly reputable sources and measures the state of peace in three areas: the level of safety and security in societies such as homicide, prison population, terrorism; the level of ongoing domestic and international conflict; and the level of militarization.
There are 126 countries and territories in this year's index. The 2023 Global Peace Index shows that the average level of global peace has declined for the ninth consecutive year, with 84 countries recording improvements and 79 countries seeing declines.
The 2023 Global Peace Index has also sparked a reaction in the US press. The New York Post was surprised when the US ranked 133rd in a new list of the safest countries in the world. The article about the ranking attracted nearly 400 comments...
“At least America isn’t one of the ten worst places to visit — those less desirable spots go to Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria, Russia, South Sudan, Congo, Iraq, Somalia, the Central African Republic and Sudan,” the article notes.
In Asia, in addition to Singapore and Japan in the top 10, other countries and territories in the top 50 positions include: Bhutan (17), Malaysia (19), Qatar (21), Taiwan (33), Kuwait (35), Vietnam (41), South Korea (43), Mongolia (44), Laos (46), Oman (48) and East Timor (49).

However, Finland is an “outlier” in the Global Peace Index, earning special mention for being one of the best, happiest and safest places to visit this year.
Low crime and violence rates, as well as low mortality rates and reduced risk of natural disasters, have made the Scandinavian country closest to Russia a top destination for tourists.
Finland was previously named the happiest country for the sixth consecutive year in a separate annual World Happiness Report.
