The agency stressed that the new US regulation “is another example of generalizing the concept of national security and abusing export controls, as well as blatantly violating multilateral international economic and trade rules.”
China's Ministry of Commerce warned that Beijing will "take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests."
Earlier in the day, the US Department of Commerce announced new export regulations for advanced computing chips used for AI, aiming to facilitate sales to allies and increase access restrictions for countries like China.
The new package of restrictions builds on controls announced in 2023 on the export of certain types of AI chips to China — a country the US views as a strategic competitor in advanced semiconductors.
The new rule updates chip control rules, requiring licenses for exports, re-exports and domestic transfers — and provides a series of exceptions for countries the US considers “friendly.”
Meanwhile, AI data centers will need to comply with enhanced security parameters to be allowed to import chips.
