The Consulate General of Vietnam in San Francisco commemorates former President Tran Duc Luong

In a solemn and emotional atmosphere, the Consulate General of Vietnam in San Francisco solemnly held a memorial service for comrade Tran Duc Luong - former member of the Politburo, former President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Consul General Hoang Anh Tuan delivered a speech at the memorial service for Comrade Tran Duc Luong.

The ceremony was held at a time when the entire nation was flying flags at half-mast and observing a national mourning period, commemorating a leader who dedicated his life to the glorious revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation.

Attending the ceremony and memorial service were all the staff and employees of the representative office, representatives of agencies alongside the Consulate General, and some diplomatic representatives in San Francisco.

In his memorial speech, Consul General Hoang Anh Tuan emphasized: “The passing of Comrade Tran Duc Luong is a great loss to the Party, the State, and our people. But the legacy he left behind – his intellect, courage, morality, and lifestyle dedicated to the country and its people – will forever be a guiding light for future generations.”

Attending the ceremony and memorial service were all the staff and employees of the representative office, representatives of agencies alongside the Consulate General, and some diplomatic representatives in San Francisco.

Comrade Tran Duc Luong was born on May 5, 1937, in Pho Khanh commune, Duc Pho district, Quang Ngai province. From 1955, he began participating in revolutionary activities and officially became a member of the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1959.

Starting as a geological engineering technician, he gradually rose through the ranks to several key positions: Director General of the General Department of Geology, Vice Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Deputy Prime Minister, and notably, President of Vietnam from 1997 to 2006.

Consul General Hoang Anh Tuan affirmed: “It was during Comrade Tran Duc Luong's term that the country achieved strong progress in economic development, accelerated industrialization and modernization, and especially in deep international integration. He was one of the people who laid a solid foundation for Vietnam-US relations in the post-normalization period, based on independent, self-reliant, multilateral, and diversified foreign policy.”

Comrade Tran Duc Luong always paid deep attention to foreign affairs and Vietnam's position in the international community. As Head of State, he made many important contributions to expanding foreign relations, promoting international cooperation, while upholding the principles of peace, sustainable development, and the supremacy of international law. Regarding the Vietnamese community abroad, Comrade Tran Duc Luong always affirmed that they are an inseparable part of the nation.

The ceremony was held with full solemnity, demonstrating the respect of the Vietnamese Consulate General in San Francisco for the nation's outstanding leader.

Comrade Tran Duc Luong repeatedly called on overseas Vietnamese to preserve their cultural identity, promote the spirit of solidarity, and make practical contributions to the cause of building and defending the Fatherland. The life and revolutionary career of Comrade Tran Duc Luong is a vivid testament to a virtuous, steadfast, and exemplary leader who always placed the national interest above all else.

Comrade [Name] was a member of the Central Committee of the Party for the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th terms; a member of the Politburo for the 8th and 9th terms; and a National Assembly delegate for many terms. For his immense contributions, he was awarded the Gold Star Order – the highest honor of the Party and State – along with many other prestigious medals and titles.

Sharing his condolences with the Vietnamese people on the passing of Comrade Tran Duc Luong, the Chinese Ambassador and Consul General in San Francisco, Mr. Jianmin Zhang, wrote in the condolence book: “On behalf of the Chinese Consulate General, I would like to express my deepest condolences on the passing of former President Tran Duc Luong. He will always be remembered for his immense contributions to the development of Vietnam and the friendship between our two nations. May he rest in peace.”

Chinese Ambassador and Consul General in San Francisco, Jianmin Zhang, paid his respects to former President Tran Duc Luong.

Some attendees at the memorial service also expressed their deep respect for former President Tran Duc Luong – a man who was regarded as calm, steadfast, and always pursued dialogue and cooperation, contributing to stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

The ceremony was held with full solemnity, demonstrating the respect of the Vietnamese Consulate General in San Francisco for the outstanding leader of the nation. At the end of the ceremony, all attendees lit candles in remembrance, paying tribute to the immense contributions of Comrade Tran Duc Luong. The light from the candles symbolized the promise of today's generation to continue the revolutionary path, serve the Fatherland, and continue to develop and integrate for a strong, peaceful, and prosperous Vietnam.

Concluding the ceremony, Consul General Hoang Anh Tuan emotionally said: “Farewell, Comrade Tran Duc Luong – a staunch communist, an exemplary leader, an outstanding son of the nation! I respectfully bow before your spirit!”
