The US Assistant Secretary of State shared that the two countries are cooperating in almost every area, from economic and investment relations, security, people-to-people exchanges, and continuing cooperation on environmental issues and clean energy.
"We remain committed to resolving post-war issues, and I think that has really helped foster mutual trust and reconciliation between the two peoples," Kritenbrink shared.
During his visit to Vietnam, Mr. Daniel Kritenbrink met with Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son and several high-ranking Vietnamese officials. Mr. Kritenbrink shared that the two sides exchanged views on bilateral relations and a number of international issues of mutual interest.
When asked about the U.S. perspective on Vietnam's foreign policy, Assistant Secretary of State Kritenbrink stated that he was not there to assess whether Vietnam's foreign policy was actually appropriate.
"We have great respect for Vietnam, and only Vietnam can decide the best way to protect its sovereignty and advance its interests," Kritenbrink observed, affirming that regardless of the US's views on other third countries, it will maintain that respect.
Mr. Kritenbrink stated that he was there to speak about the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and the United States, as well as everything the two countries are doing together.
"We are fully invested in Vietnam's success; together we are investing in our shared future, the future of our two nations," the US Assistant Secretary of State emphasized.
As friends and comprehensive strategic partners, Mr. Kritenbrink affirmed that the US and Vietnam have also had frank discussions, including on issues where the two sides differ. He also affirmed that this was a very positive visit and reflects the reality that we have a truly positive partnership.
The trust between the United States and Vietnam has never been stronger or deeper than it is now.
Responding to Thanh Nien newspaper about the relationship between the two countries after upgrading to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, US Assistant Secretary of State Kritenbrink said that trust between the US and Vietnam has never been stronger and deeper than it is now.
Mr. Kritenbrink stated that the upgrade would be ineffective without the immense trust between the two sides and the foundations they have built together over the past nearly 30 years.
"I believe that strategic trust is at an all-time high. That is perhaps the most important foundational element of the partnership," Kritenbrink affirmed. The US Assistant Secretary of State emphasized that the US is committed to supporting a strong, independent, self-reliant, and prosperous Vietnam.
The economic and trade relationship between the two sides remains more important than ever. Mr. Kritenbrink noted that, looking at the joint statement on strategic partnership, the two countries discussed extensively investing in Vietnam's capabilities, including in information technology and building a semiconductor ecosystem, as well as training and upgrading the Vietnamese workforce.
"I think that's really important, and I think both our countries and the world will benefit from Vietnam's success," Kritenbrink emphasized.
Regarding the recognition of Vietnam as a market economy, the US Assistant Secretary of State stated that it is a formal process carried out by the Department of Commerce, but Mr. Kritenbrink emphasized that trade between the two countries is approximately $124 billion annually, an all-time high, and the US remains Vietnam's largest export market.
