Rafael Nadal will not play any clay matches ahead of Roland Garros, as he withdraws from the Rome Masters.

"I am very sorry to announce that I will not be able to be in Rome," Nadal wrote on Twitter on May 5, about missing the tournament he has won 10 times. "You all know how heartbreaking it is for me to miss one of the most important tournaments of my career, where I have all the love and support of the Italian fans."

Nadal has been injured since January 19, when he lost in the second round of the Australian Open. He was later diagnosed with an eight-week hip injury. But now he has missed twice that number. The 36-year-old has missed eight tournaments in the past three months, including the major clay-court tournaments in Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid and Rome.

The images of Nadal training at his tennis academy seemed to bring positive signals about the "King of Clay"'s physical condition. But in the end, Nadal was not in the best shape to participate in the Rome Masters, leading to not playing any matches on clay before coming to Roland Garros. On Twitter , the 36-year-old tennis player also said that he needed more time to practice at high intensity.

"At the moment, we work about an hour and a half a day and we continue to improve," Nadal coach Carlos Moya told L'Equipe . "It's not a question of being optimistic or pessimistic, we're just observing the progress every day. We're a little sad because he hasn't played on clay yet this season. Nadal is the saddest, but we try to encourage him."

The Rome Masters runs from May 10 to 21, while Roland Garros starts on May 28. Nadal is currently ranked 14th in the world and is likely to continue to drop in ranking ahead of the clay Grand Slam. That puts Nadal at a disadvantage heading into Roland Garros, as the Spaniard is likely to face higher seeds early.
