Improve the efficiency of fruit tree production area

In recent years, localities in the province have been interested in expanding the area of fruit trees to increase the production value per unit of cultivation. Currently, the total area of fruit trees in the province is estimated at nearly 6,400 hectares, including many specialized areas. In many localities, areas have been built to convert fruit trees into specialty products, typical products favored by consumers.

To develop and enhance the value of fruit trees, localities have oriented and supported people to produce in a specialized direction, with systematic investment in both varieties and science and technology. Regarding tree varieties, old, ineffective varieties have been replaced by new varieties with potential productivity and quality. Specifically, localities have replaced the previously native longan with new varieties such as: early and late ripening longan; Huong Chi longan...

With banana trees (nearly 1,900 hectares), in addition to the Dai Hoang banana specialty area of more than 100 hectares, other production areas mostly use western banana and pink banana varieties for large, good quality fruits. Or the famous U egg hybrid lychee growing area in Nguyen Uy commune (Kim Bang town) is gradually replacing the old variety with the pink U egg variety for a more beautiful fruit appearance. In addition, hundreds of hectares of guava are basically planted with the Taiwanese pear guava variety with thick flesh, large fruit, and good quality. During the production process, growers pay special attention to the fruit tree care regime for sustainable growth, giving good quality fruit such as: mainly using organic fertilizer (composted chicken manure), adding phosphorus and potassium; basically eliminating nitrogen. During important periods of growth and development of the tree, growers add soybean and corn powder to increase nutrients... In addition, fruit tree growers in the province also have access to and master the techniques of pruning branches and shaping the canopy after each harvest so that the tree can grow and produce high yields in the next crop...

The area of Taiwanese guava cultivation in Trac Van commune, Duy Tien town is grown organically, bringing high economic efficiency.

Mr. Nguyen Hai Nam, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Forestry (Department of Agriculture and Environment) said: Localities have basically eliminated mixed gardens and converted many areas of ineffective rice fields to fruit tree development. Fruit tree production in the province is developing in the direction of garden economy. This is one of the main directions to effectively exploit the potential and strengths of agricultural land. The industry is continuing to orient and support farmers in both production and trade promotion for products.

Not only focusing on introducing new varieties into production, the development and application of science and technology have been effective in the fruit growing areas of the province. Typically, the grapefruit growing area of Du Long residential group, Chau Giang ward (Duy Tien town) has up to 13 hectares meeting VietGAP standards. The grapefruit trees here are cared for with the right techniques, always achieving high productivity and good quality. The selling price is maintained from 15 - 18 thousand VND/fruit. Grapefruit products in the production area of Du Long residential group are basically ordered early by customers, both wholesale and retail. In recent years, the area converted from ineffective rice land in Thanh Huong commune (Thanh Liem) has become a famous guava growing area. Guava trees grown here meet VietGAP standards and are recognized as OCOP (One Commune One Product Program). The products made at times could not meet the market demand. Ms. Do Thi Chuyen, Thanh Huong commune, has 2 hectares of Taiwanese pear guava in the production area. She shared: To have good quality guava, the production process must strictly follow the care process. The family's guava products are known and ordered by many consumers. During the peak harvest season, the family sells more than 300 kg of guava every day, and the products do not have any backlog...

In terms of production efficiency, the area of fruit trees is superior to many other crops. On average, the value of fruit tree production is from 150 - 300 million VND/ha/year. Many fruit growing areas have a value of up to 300 - 500 million VND/ha/year. Fruit trees have become the main source of income for many households. For example, the grapefruit production area that meets VietGAP standards reaches from 400 - 450 million VND/ha/year, after deducting costs, the profit is over 50%. The area of Taiwanese guava is nearly 500 million VND/ha/year, the production cost is only 30 - 40%...

For fruit production, the main difficulty at present is that people have not yet fully exploited the strengths of typical and specialty products. Most products are mainly sold on the free market, leading to unstable prices, falling during the harvest season. Producers do not have measures to preserve fruits, leading to having to sell them immediately after harvest even though the price is not good...

Fruit tree production in the province has now formed concentrated areas. Many products have been certified to meet VietGAP and OCOP standards, have built geographical indications, been granted growing area codes, have labels of origin, etc. This is an advantage in the process of developing fruit trees in localities. The problem now is the need for solutions to overcome and limit the difficulties mentioned above. Thus, new fruit tree products can promote their potential and strengths, helping to expand the market, increase value and income for people.
