When it comes to tilapia, I remember Dr. Tran Dinh Luan - Director of the Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Control. Previously, when working in Soc Trang , Dr. Luan had the idea of developing tilapia farming in brackish water areas, following the structure of one shrimp farming crop in the dry season and one tilapia farming crop in the rainy season. According to Dr. Luan, if this farming structure is well implemented, the farming environment will be significantly improved, helping to limit diseases and increase the success rate of the shrimp crop. However, what Dr. Luan is concerned about now is how to get good breeds that meet the criteria: fast weight gain, high fillet ratio, low feed conversion ratio (FCR) ... and especially there must be a link in the product consumption stage.

Tiger shrimp and white-leg shrimp are high-value farming species, considered key farming species of the Vietnamese aquaculture industry in general and the key shrimp farming area of the Mekong Delta in particular, but often face diseases, unfavorable farming conditions and in recent years have had to compete fiercely with other shrimp farming powers. Meanwhile, tilapia is considered easier to raise, does not require much technique, has a relatively short farming time and has a large consumer market, including the demanding Halal market. Not only that, tilapia farming is also a good support solution for improving the brackish water shrimp pond environment, without requiring additional investment in facilities and human resources.
Tilapia is known as a "biological water purifier" with the ability to use filamentous algae, multicellular algae, grass algae, organic debris and some small animals as food, fish slime reduces the density of Vibrio sp in the water very effectively. Therefore, in old shrimp ponds, ponds with many snails, algae or ponds with continuous disease, if tilapia is released, it will help change the environment and isolate pathogens. For brackish water shrimp farming areas in the Mekong Delta, tilapia can be raised almost all year round, but according to export processing enterprises, the quality of tilapia will be better when raised in brackish water.
According to the survey results and evaluation of export processing enterprises, the development of tilapia farming is very potential because tilapia is suitable for many farming areas of the province, has a large consumption market, is economically and environmentally effective and especially can support shrimp farming well through cleaning the environment, limiting diseases in shrimp. That is also the reason why Tai Kim Anh Seafood Processing Joint Stock Company proposed to the provincial leaders to develop tilapia farming areas for export processing on March 5, in the form of association and consumption between the company and farmers. That shows that the potential for tilapia development in Soc Trang is very large, if well promoted, it will create more jobs, increase income for people and export turnover value for the province.
Not having to wait until now, but in the past, in addition to some potential farming objects in brackish and salty areas such as: whiteleg shrimp, tiger prawn, sea bass, goby, snakehead fish... tilapia was also of great interest to the provincial agricultural sector, because tilapia has a large consumer market, is economically efficient to raise and also supports shrimp farming well through cleaning the environment and limiting diseases in shrimp. This is also a fairly familiar aquatic species, contributing positively to the success of brackish water shrimp farming and has great development potential, meeting export standards, especially on the brackish water shrimp farming area. The writer still remembers that as early as 2019, in Tran De district, Vinh Chau town... there were households that cooperated with Thang Long Biotechnology Company Limited to raise tilapia for processing and export.
The development of tilapia farming is currently very suitable, because in addition to the above advantages, the issue of fish fry has also been greatly improved and right in the province, there is currently a high-quality tilapia fish fry production area of Thang Long Biotechnology Company Limited. Regarding the issue of consumption, in addition to a number of units inside and outside the province that are purchasing, Tai Kim Anh Seafood Processing Joint Stock Company is completing the construction of a processing plant and is ready to cooperate and link consumption with farmers, with the expected consumption output in the first phase of about 200 tons of raw fish/day and then 400 - 500 tons of fish/day. In addition to consuming commercial fish for farmers, the company also cooperates with domestic and foreign partners to supply fish fry, feed... ensuring quality and reasonable prices.
The construction of a factory specializing in processing tilapia products by Tai Kim Anh Seafood Processing Joint Stock Company is of great significance to the province, as it contributes to solving the province's labor force and consuming tilapia output from farming households. According to the writer's research, not only Tai Kim Anh Seafood Processing Joint Stock Company but also a few other enterprises in the province are currently experimenting with raising tilapia in a high salinity environment to process value-added products, conquering demanding markets, but with high selling prices.
