Hot weather, fresh coconut price doubled

Ms. Tran Thi An, living in District 10, said: "For more than a month now, the hot weather has been 'melting fat', I have no appetite for anything, but almost every day I drink a fresh coconut to cool down. Some days I even add a glass of coconut pennywort or mung bean pennywort. I see that this is also a trend for many people in my city, so places selling fresh coconut, sugarcane juice, and smoothies are selling like hotcakes everywhere. The price of fresh coconut has skyrocketed recently."

Sharing the same opinion, Mr. Nguyen Van Ngoc, in Binh Thanh said: "I also really like drinking fresh coconut water because it is good for my health, I drink it almost 3-4 times a week. I usually buy the kind that people put in plastic bags or cups, regularly 10,000 - 15,000 VND/bag or cup. Only recently did I discover that although the price has not changed, the amount is only about half of what it was before. The recent glasses of coconut water also have more sugar and ice than before."

According to Thanh Nien's research, at the same time last year, the price of fresh coconuts in Ho Chi Minh City was commonly 10,000 VND/large fruit, and 2 small coconuts for thirst quenching were 15,000 VND. By the beginning of this year, the price of coconuts for thirst quenching had increased to 10,000 VND/fruit and now many places sell them for 15,000 VND/fruit. Large coconut varieties cost 20,000 VND/fruit.

Some fresh coconut suppliers said that since Tet, the hot weather has been prolonged, causing the demand for fresh coconuts to increase sharply. It is normal for coffee shops and beverage shops to consume 200-300 coconuts per day. Compared to other soft drinks, the price of fresh coconuts is still low and very good for health, so it attracts a lot of consumers.

According to the Vietnam Coconut Association, we are currently negotiating with China to sign a protocol on official fresh coconut exports. If we can open this market of 1.4 billion people, fresh coconuts could become a billion-dollar commodity and the domestic price of fresh coconuts would also improve significantly, creating good income for coconut growers./.
